The new 44 is here!
Lgs had 3 of them last month
I had them all in front of me and picked one out than had the manager come over and pick one out, they happened to be the same one. Fit and finish was really nice on all 3.
The one they had on display had a pretty good dent in the grips but they had the nicest figure, I’m sure it happened in the store. I chose the best out of the other two.
Times up nice on all six, trigger felt great with snap caps in both single and double action. Barrel clocked correctly and I’m really happy to see the return to flash chromed controls. Despite all the negative posts, I’ve never had a problem with a new smith and don’t expect to on this one. I tend to believe (right or wrong)for every bad review/post you find there’s hundreds if not thousands of guys that have a positive experience and just don’t say anything.
Hopefully will have Sunday off and can try it out!

Nice example of a 629 Mountain Gun and it's always good to be able to pick one out of several. My first 617 MG had an awful finish but my 2'nd one was very nicely finished. ITs interesting that the N frame MGs retain their original locking system whereas the K and L framed MGs have the ball detent lockup in the frame and crane. Enjoy your new 629 MG, you have a nice one.
 
You'd better start racking up some OT there Chris. You're a four inch N frame magnet! I hope you do get a chance soon to test drive both of your new ones and dirty them up. And I agree with you that we normally only hear about the bad guns that get thru QC. It's a lot easier on a forum to bash a product than praise. Now get on out to the back yard and shoot them things!
 
Glad you are happy with it. These are really nice guns.

You might want to see if your brass dot is secure. One of mine disappeared.

I check every couple days expecting to see a couple more models drop. Fingers crossed 🤞. Hoping for a 627. 357, Or a 648 .22WMR.
 
Looks great and nice figure on the stocks! My question is what is the story with the bullet holes in your work bench? Edit - never mind now I see screws in what looked like bullet holes

Those look like screws in the bullet holes! Now come down my cellar. I have a few scars on the walls and floor that deserve a good story!
I’m with you on the one bad out of a few hundred or so. No easy way to find out I suppose.

Screws, I can normally get by with two presses but prefer using a new style RCBS supreme rock chucker when loading the full length H and H magnum length cases. So that one is on and off a couple times a year.
 
I am happy with mine. I like the standard stocks and the balance of the pistol.
It is a loud bang, a fireball, and you best hold on to it. Quality seems good. One of my favorite targets is a gallon milk jug full of water at 50 feet. You do not need a second shot.
Only photo I have right now is with another 4 in N frame, a 25-5.

I really like mine. Have about 500 rounds split equally between 44 mag and 44 Special. No issues at all. Like it so much just snagged a 617 from Tyler Gun Works. Hopefully it shoots great too.

Looks really nice and that is a fine wood grip. Big congrats to you on the 44mag revolver. Have fun shooting her.

Ohh yes it will, I’ve switched to hp 38 for the target type loads (800 ish)
My unique is reserved for the mid range type loads (975 ish) 9.2 grains to be exact 🤠
I like the grips on that one, getting kind of rare these days

Nice! I almost sold mine to fund a few GB purchases but narrowly averted that little disaster and as such I still have it. I'd REALLY like to see what I can do for it grip-wise though - the Bear Hugs are perfectly nice looking (not nearly as well-figured as yours) but they're absolutely cruel with full-power loads. So I can shoot .44 Specials, get some Hogue or Pachmayr rubber grips, or.....what else is out there? Hmm?

Put 10.0 grains of Unique in there and you will get a bigger smile. My target load since 1981. Not full power but still a serious load well above 44 special.
 
Well I was loading for the 45 colt one day and being the lazy sob that I can be, instead of resetting the powder measure (8.5gr unique) I switched over and loaded some cast 44 mag.
That is a pleasant load.
I have the new Anaconda 4" .

I haven't gotten my grubby mitts on a 44MG yet.
The lgs had a 610 MG and I did purchase that one.
 
The Bear Hug grips on the various Mountain Guns can be hit of miss. Some look very bland and others like yours are beautifully grained. My 629 MG I just picked up having already acquired a 617 and 686. Now if they'd only do a run in 327 Magnum I'd be really happy.DSC03866.webpDSC03864.webp
 
Congrats! Regarding the one in the showcase with a dented grip. I bought a new 686+ MG last Sept. When I got it home to clean up, the grips felt stuck to the frame after removing the screw. Stupidly I rapped the opposite grip on the side with a plastic handled screwdriver and dented it pretty good. Boy was I pissed at myself. After doing some reading I tried a trick recommended by some here on this forum. Wet a terry wash cloth. Place it over the dent and use the tip of a heated clothes iron to gently press on the wet cloth over the dent. Hold it for a few seconds, remove it and check the dent. Mine was 80% gone on the first try. I did it one or two more times and the dent was completely removed. I couldn't believe how well that worked. Anyway love my MG. Not one issue and it's more accurate than I am.
