Theft or NOT

Was eating Sunday lunch with the Family @ Pizza Hut. We saw A Person after paying and starting toward the door and stopped at the salad bar grabbed several packs of crackers and several packets of Dressing and sticking them in his pockets. We had a discussion at the table. Most of us thought Theft especially after he paid. College student with us said he seen him eating at the salad bar and it is all you can so he should be allowed to have taken it with him. There were no signs no carry out of from the Sald bar but i believe eat all you can is no carry outs i say petty theft.
What does the forum think?
 
If I go in and get the salad bar deal, get my salad and 6 packs of dressing and 8 packs of crackers…then having only used half the dressings and eaten half the crackers I pocket them and go pay the cashier it’s not theft in your mind ……but if I snag a few on the way out it is?

Pretty trivial. If they didn’t anticipate I’d assume the company would put limits on the number or access to the mentioned items.

Perhaps they asked when they paid…..”hey, mind if I grab a few on the way out?”
 
Put me in the guilty room...when I buy takehome Chinese food I always grab a handful of soy sauce packets and duck sauce packets for the egg rolls...I probably have 20 to 30 here at the house...They never give you enough if you ask....but this place puts boxes of sauces out on the counter so you can get what you need....

Go to Seattle, Portland or anywhere in that vicinity and Walgreens has to have armed security in the condom aisle...Seriously.

Everything is locked behind glass like pepto-bismol, vitamins....everything because thieves walk right in a take it and dare the staff to do anything.

You are landlocked in some kind of sanity in Indiana...Step across the line into Illinois and holla at me.
 
I used to do similar…then I became a restaurant manager for several years. That taught me not to do such things. Even the best restaurants run very tight profit margins due not only to competition but payroll costs, waste…everything.

This was over forty years ago but condiment packs of ketchup and mustard cost about two cents per pack…multiply that by potentially hundreds or more a day being taken beyond use in the restaurant can really cut into profits. Add to that taking napkins, plasticware, sweeteners, etc., and it can create a situation where bad things can begin from small beginnings.

Even now…when I see restaurant employees hand out far too many condiments I’ll mention to the manager that’s lost profit.

Some may say such things are figured into pricing it’s not quite true. The costs of condiments, napkins, etc., are figured into food costs but only a certain amount…not people helping themselves.

If it was your restaurant and your money at stake…you wouldn’t like it.
 
Folks put ranch dressing on their pizza, it’s a normal thing.

Edit: for purposes of clarity I am calling what pizza hut serves “pizza” and am referring to the crazy people that put ranch dressing on such “pizza” as normal. I think it's all an abomination.
 
I have seen a couple articles on restaurants that have their own seasoned salt for fries or chicken or whatever. Some of these places must have some pretty good salt, because people kept stealing the containers. They have had to move it behind the counter. Even offering it for sale didn't slow the thefts. At some point they have to do something to stop bleeding money.
It's things like this that are the reason we have the saying, "That is why we can't have nice things."
 
I think it's lack of class, and an unfortunate sign of the times. Theft is a legal term, though. Its when we get the two conflated that disagreements and emotions flare up. When I was growing up my grandfather always complained about establishments not providing condiments, or charging for water, etc. He said that doing so should be considered a 'cost of doing business.' In this regard he was entirely correct but tragically, until almost the very end he never quite really considered just how far society went down the pipes as this was concerned. And so now we have to post armed security to literally secure everything, no matter how trifling it may seem to be, because the human leeches out there will TAKE it!

And as much as I hate to say it, I don't really see it getting any better in my lifetime.

The price you pay for your salad bar is calculated upon consideration of the fella' taking some extra crackers and dressing. If you want to pay $5 more per salad to fund a salad bar Nazi to guard the condiments, so be it. We ate at a Chick Fil A in downtown Saint Louis that had all the condiments behind the counter. Nice fella' at the register told me "Dude, we're in Saint Louis. Leave 'em out and there won't be any . . . "

So true...even here they ration out there mints in the morning when they open, once the little tray of mints is empty there are
no more until tomorrow....I asked the manager about the mints and he told me everyone used to leave with all pockets full of
mints so they had to ration them out on a per day basis...probably only about 50 per day now......
 
IIRC once condiment packets "hit the table"/ are touched by customer they are to be thrown away. Not always followed...but code in most places
