This is a great thread! I love those old N frames, thank all of you for sharing...
In my youth, I had a 38/44 with a 6.5" barrel all tricked out by a previous owner as a target pistol. S/N 41974. Loved that gun. Sold it to pay for flying lessons along with the reloading equipment. Good decision but it miss that gun. Recently purchased a new 586-8 with a 6" barrel because it reminded me of it.
The Transitional Outdoorsman is a favorite ! I have posted these photos a couple times in the past but this thread is a perfect place to try again.

This is my 38/44 Heavy Duty. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
It’s a rugged fella with good honest wear. Left to me by my grandfather and the gun’s character reflects his own.

I hesitate to post any photos after Richard’s display of engraved pintos, but here goes anyway.
Shipped December 1934. It came with a “picture box” but AFAICT those weren’t introduced until the next year.

Here is my 38/44 High speed Outdoorsman. Mfg 1938 serial number 54354 6.5 inch barrel, paid $225 in 1990 from a pawn shop called the Bargain Barn. Stocks are not numbered to the gun but are close to what it would have had.
I reload cartridges to original specs. as she is a shooter for sure. I plan on getting a letter as soon as my application in S&WCA is approved.
Mine came with a second (shorter) front sight, right above the barrel in the case. I haven't swapped them out as I like the POI with the taller one.

Well, here is mine. For now; I'm in the process of thinning the heard. It's a "Transition" model lettered to Belknap Hardware in Louisville KY, in August 1946.
Here it is with its 1930's Clark shoulder holster
I keep it with 1Aspenhill's (Bill Patteson, RIP) challenge coin.

Here is mine bracketed by two 520s, it is a 1955 vintage that was shipped to Seattle Hardware Company, Seattle, Washington in November 1955.
I has been re-blued and the seller who had it lettered told me that it was. I put on the grip adapter, and it now has a Wondersight on it.

I have posted this one before under Law Enforcement Firearms, but here is my .38/44.
S&W model .38/44 Heavy Duty Marked to the British Columbia Provincial Police
According to the seller I got it from a few years back - S&W model .38/44 Heavy Duty (not Outdoorsman) in .38 Special, with 5" barrel. It is in very good to excellent condition and the bore is the same. It is marked to the old British Columbia Police (BCP-437 stamped on butt). Appears to have been fired very little. Date of Manf -1940 (date not yet verified).
SN 61732 on butt, cylinder, the cylinder rod groove inside the shroud and inside the right grip. Swing out crane is different, of course.
No MP markings.

Nah... No such thing as a plain jane heavy duty and my experience is the forum members with the magnificent collections are also friendly and fun loving gun guys like we all are. An honest wear shooter will always get my respect.
