As already stated, each state has their own definition of "concealed". Here in Illinois, 51% of the gun has to be covered to qualified as "concealed". But from a practical standpoint, I want my gun completely covered and not printing.

I actually had an Iowa Concealed Carry permit, so I was legal to carry concealed if asked. However after many years and after many encounters with the Rangers no one asked or even seemed to notice, and I was always curious how the LEO's would view it. Of course this was in the 1980 to 2010 era before CO went so blue.
First, the following is NOT meant to criticize Borderboss. In fact, he just might be correct.
That said, found it amazing re: just 51% of gun must be covered to be considered concealed. So did some research…
Could not find 51% reference anywhere in Illinois laws. Did find there was some info suggesting “mostly” was statutorily included so not to make the carrier in violation if he/she raised arms above head, bent over, wind blew covering garment, etc.
Perhaps ISPCapt will check in to clarify.

In my state any fire arm that was not 100% visible is considered concealed. So think old west style carry vs i got my jacket covering 3/4 of my gun. At least that was the law before constitutional carry passed. Now it really dosent matter unless you violate the guide lines.

In the 16 hours of classes that are required to get your CCL here in the People's Republic of Illinois, the legal commentary is that "mostly" in the law is legally equivalent to 51%.

A little PSA, if you don't mind. Make sure that you are up on the concealed carry laws in your state and don't rely on your concealed carry class instructor. If you have a question about anything he says, check for yourself. Here in Virginia open carry is legal without a permit. The instructor stated that even though open carry is legal, if you sit down in your vehicle with your gun in its holster, it's considered concealed. I didn't think this was correct and contacted the Virginia Citizens' Defense League to see it he was correct. He was totally wrong.

I've served as a police officer as did my father and a couple of uncles.
We were required by our jurisdictions to be armed at all times.
So, how does that look at Christmas dinner at grandma's?
Bunch of guys sitting around the table "strapped"?......no.
As each man entered with his wife and family he would excuse himself to the restroom.
No flash, no announcements, no fanfare.
In the bathroom was a stack of bath towels and that's where the pistols and holster went. Off the belt and quietly stashed between the towels.
Looking back, I'm pretty sure anyone who let a pistol be seen at the dinner table would NEVER make that mistake again.
When I got on the job, that stack of towels and house rules continued. One of my son's is a police officer and he was raised around this culture. I had only heard one or two references while growing up and it was in the vein of "being polite".
However.....
The law is the law. What went on in our homes had EVERYTHING to do with the law, but nothing to do with the law. It was just being a gentleman. Shooting irons at the dinner table would have been like a plumber throwing a slimey pipe wrench on the salad bar.
I'm suggesting that maybe in exercising our rights, because we have the right to, might not be the best plan.
Once you are armed with the law, understand it, and embrace it....well,? State law or grandma's law.
Even "brandishing" has narrow legal definitions. In one state it's a peak of a pistol butt under a shirt tail. In the next state over it might be a clearly defined outline under clothing.

I'll just say it...open carry is stupid! If I see one more doofus in Walmart with his torn jeans, sideways ball cap, and his Uncle Mike's (sorry Uncle Mike) holster barely holding in his fantastic plastic Glock clone I am going to puke! I'm in Virginia and open carry is legal.
It's not cool, no one thinks you are "the man", and you are proving what many anti-gunners feel...that just any knob can carry a gun and shoot people.
Think about it...when was the last time you saw a well dressed man (or woman) open carrying?
Carry it concealed, train with your weapon, and be ready...no one needs to see your gun...oh, and BTW Bubba, I am going to shoot you first if I am a bad guy...just so you know!
