I enjoy these discussions because I learn a lot. Debating is different than arguing.

I wasn’t talking about my grammar errors. I acknowledged in post #66 that I was wrong.

I see now a revolver is a pistol after all.

The F&S article I asked you to read said revolvers were pistols until the BATF made a distinction. That was a lightbulb moment. Nothing the BATF says is credible.
 
If I lay down and aim my Contender by extending my arms, then decide to roll over and aim at a different target. Has my Contender become a revolver? Is the elastic cartridge holder on my forearm a magazine. Lastly, and most importantly, will my intended target care?

Firearm nomenclature is a twisted, convoluted, and ever-changing mess! Often instigated by well-meaning but misinformed individuals. Sometime those individuals are in charge of writing articles in gun magazines, sometimes presenting a definition in a form of dictionary, but worst of all they have written or at least officially contributed to our military's Field Manuels, thus then make a mistake into "Official" but not necessarily correct terminology!

I have an acquaintance that documented Monks misspelling words in hand copied Bibles changing the language of an entire people group!

We just need to remember: People are imperfect! And anything that involves people is subject to being imperfect.

So much for my straddling both side of the middle for today!

A Steam Engine burns fuel, coal or wood.

My Ducati has a motor, 12 volts. It starts the engine which burns 91 octane gasoline.

I blame the Brits for misnaming engines. They get all sorts of stuff mixed up. You ought to see what they call Football.

That yellow/orange thing on your dash is a check ENGINE light.
 
The term pistol can refer to both semi auto and revo's.

Calling a revolver a pistol is historically and broadly technically correct. Both are subcategories of handguns. However, modern firearm terminology typically treats them as distinct opposites

I have 2 boats. One has an inboard engine and the other an outboard motor. Both are 4-strokes and both have 3 liter displacement.

Must be yet another misuse of words. Or was the fault started my Ole Evinrude?
 
Look at any 4473 form. You have several choices

pistol
long gun
other [ like pistol-grip firearms (e.g., Shockwave or Tac-14). [1]

Pistol covers both revo's and semi's in that category.

From the ATF Form 4473 instructions:
Types of firearms include, but are not limited to: pistol, revolver, rifle, shotgun, receiver, frame, and firearms that are neither handguns nor long guns (rifles or shotguns), such as firearms having a pistol grip that expel a shotgun shell (pistol grip firearm) or NFA firearms (machinegun, silencer, short-barreled shotgun, short-barreled rifle, destructive device, or “any other weapon”).

"revolver" is given as a choice. "pistol " is not defined, but I assume the term includes single shot break open handguns, semi-auto handguns, bolt-action handguns. All of the above described firearms must have barrels shorter than 16 inches, overall length shorter than 26 inches.

GCA 1968 made it a legal distinction. Before that the term pistol was often applied to revolvers as well as magazine fed handguns, derringers and single shots.

"Motors" utilize a secondary source of energy such as electricity, to power the device; whereas with actual "engines" a fuel, which is a primary energy source, is consumed in situ, producing the energy to power the device.

In engineering, electricity is a secondary energy source rather than a "fuel".

But why do some folks call car engines "motors"?

It's because they're mistaken, just like those who call cartridges "bullets".

And folks enjoyed "motoring around" rather than "engining around" in Henry Fords horseless carriages which were powered by engines.
 
My revolver uses "clips" for loading.
