I Just have 4 Smith revolvers. How many guns do's a person really need?

The proper answer is: =X+1 with X being the number you currently own.
I'm sure there are those who have built new rooms for their guns.

That only works if you have only 1 use for a gun. As an example.
Your ccw piece won’t work on a trap or skeet field.
Minimum is 5 to barely cover all bases.
.22 rifle .30 cal rifle preferably same operating system.
.22 Revolver or pistol.
Sub Compact and full size handgun in same duty caliber. Either revolver or pistol
Substitute shotgun for rifle?
Longmire seemed to get by with a 1911 and a 30/30. Just fiction, but food for thought.
Back to the OP’s specific situation.

But why 2 617’s?
If I had to limit myself to 4 revolvers, I would take a second J frame or N frame over a second 617.

My other half likes jewelry. She buys also for investment. I have one safe that has 57 S&W revolvers in it. I love them, but also look at them as an investment. I haven't bought one for years, but every one that I have is worth more money than I paid for it, some of them are worth twice as much. They are like jewelry for men (and actually some women as well).

I’m 71 and I believe if you want it and can afford it get whatever you want! Life is not only short it gets shorter as you live it.
Well I certainly do not need any more S&Ws or guns in general but I enjoy them and enjoy collecting, shooting etc..
I know a day will come would I need to retire/ cull the heard but lets not go there quite yet.
Besides it is a fantastic hobby !!!!!!!!!!

you’re “old” once you start thinking you’re old…agree about the 100 gun guy… i have roughly 85 but I am constantly buying, selling, trading… hard to hit a moving target

I probably really "need" 4 or 5 of the guns I own. But I "want" all of them.
I agree! I'm 70 and not old either. I can't do some of the things I used to do but who cares. I've got the rest of my life to do whatever I want.
Retirement is like summer vacation to me...especially when it's hot out like right now. I love it.

That's 31+ just to start though some could carry over like SC-OSR to ICORE-OPEN
And that just scratches the surface. Get into 2/3 gun. NRA Precision and Action Pistol
But that MIGHT-T-T-T suffice for pistols. What about:
Hunting - pistol, rifle and shotgun
Shotgun Sports - trap, skeet, field and their many classifications
Rifle only Sports - action rifle, long range, precision, etc.
Oh and did I mention Black Powder?

Well to start with, S serial K-frame m&p 38s were offered in 4 barrel lengths.
Prewar Target guns. Then the Target guns were offered post war K-frame, N-frame.
27s in all barrel lengths, 29s in all barrel lengths. Registered Magnum. Triple lock, military issued guns. Rare variations.
