Model 41 ammo

I have two 41’s that I shoot often. In my research I have found the CCI Standard Velocity LR ammo works the best. The problem is all the major gun shops in my area are sold out and have no idea when they will get resupplied. I have tried the cheaper Remington and Winchester with terrible results. Any suggestions on another ammo that works? Thanks

My 41 likes the CCI Standard also - just place an order a few bricks from Natchez, Sports South or Midway

My 41 is a renegade. It won't eat CCI Standard to save its life - so to speak. It does well with Eley Target. I have never figured out why, but I surmise it's the bullet lube and maybe bullet shape. It still fumbles Eley now and then, but typically it's because the gun is too dirty or too clean. Yeah, it's a picky one.

If you can't find CCI Standard Velocity, look for something with the same FPS rating.

Don't go to cheaper. As a generality, cheaper means less consistent.

That CCI standard velocity ammo shoots great in 2 of my rifles too. I have had pretty good luck
ordering ammo online from Cabelas, and having shipped free, to local store for pickup. Mabey Bass Pro will do the same. If you have a store close. I have had good luck with Federal Automatch in my Ruger MK3, and My S&W 22A. Results definitely are all over the board with
22 ammo and what a gun likes.

Aguilla runs good in my 41 but they are also hard to find sometimes.

My 41 and Ruger MKIIs all run ok with CCI Standard Velocity. Auto Match is fine in MKII. I run a buffer in my 41 so not worried about running other ammo.

At least with my 41s, it's more about what will reliable run in them.

They are beautiful but finicky beasts.

Try the CCI Green Label . I don't know if it's true or not ......... I read where the Green Label is from when they random test lots . If a lot exhibits higher accuracy , they package it as Green Label . I know it's more accurate in my pistols and my range buddys' , that's all I can say .

Guns like the 41 are finicky on ammo

Is there some reason that you can not order the CCI ammo online??

That's it , senior moment .

I just won a couple of bricks of Western T22 SV on Gunbroker to see how it works in my M41 and High Standards. If not acceptable with the autos, then I have a few revolvers to try also. Was a cheap score and have a enough CCI right now. LGS keeps it in stock.

My Model 41s and my High Standard Victors and Supermatic Citation all shoot well with both CCI SV and SK Standard Plus.

MY 41 is like me, it enjoys good quality sustenance. Feed it CCI or similar and it performs fine, try the cheap stuff and it tends to suffer from regurgitation.

For pretty much any 22 if I know what it likes I just order more of it and save myself the trouble of trying other stuff.

Target Sports (online) online has the best prices anywhere they will deliver it right to your door. When you buy a case the freight is also free. If they are temporarily out of stock, just enter your email and check the notify you box. They get that ammo in all the time and the wait is not bad. They are reputable, ship very fast and again - straight to your door step - no signature required.

CCI standard 40 grain, standard velocity is most people's go-to M41 ammo and I could not recommend a better ammo anywhere. Buy by the case (5,000 rounds) and avoid the hassles of running out. When you get down to 3-4 brick just order another case.

NOTE: you can normally save $100 by getting the 50 round cardboard boxes rather than the 100 round plastic sleeves with the slide top.

I use CCI SV exclusively in my 41. I have had problems with the rounds getting stuck in the chamber, probably from not properly cleaning the chamber. I'm more diligent about cleaning now and to hedge my bets I also lube all the rounds with One Shot case lube. Just slide them out of the box with the bullet up on a towel and give it a good shot and let dry. Since doing this I've not had a problem in thousands of rounds.

I, too, have a 41, and it best likes CCI. Local TSC carries it. Currently says 5 boxes left. If you have a Rural King near, they may have it too.

If you have a decades ago M41, the first thing to do is buy new OEM M41 mainsprings, and install one. It is easy to do.



Weak mainsprings cause subtle malfunctions due to weak ignition (squibs, misfires, ) and timing issues such as failures to feed and stove pipes. Different lots, different brands may have more sensitive priming compound, and those will work for a time, but given time, the mainspring just gets weaker and weaker.



Also replace your recoil spring. The M46 came with a 1968 mainspring and recoil spring. Both needed replacing.






The wax coating on old rimfire ammunition will cause failures to fire and squibs. I am of the opinion that mummified wax will prevent the shell from going all the way down in the chamber. If the rim is not firmly set against the breech face, what results will be misfires, squibs, stovepipes. Which is what happened with my old Armscor ammunition








The next time I went to the range with the Ruger MKIV and 1987 Armscor, I used my bottle of 3:1 to liberally pour oil over every round in the magazine. The pistol ran much better.

Three and one oil must have a solvent in it that helped dissolve the old dried out wax on these rounds. The pistol and ammunition ran better with 3:1 than with plain old mineral oil.

It was messy as all heck, I had oil oozing out of the mechanism. Sure kept the slide oiled and it kept the wax and powder residue moist. Had to clean my hands, but pistol cleanup was quick, everything just wiped out.



Never oil 22lr and expect it to fire off next week or next month. Oil has duded month old ammunition of mine. Only oil just before loading and shooting.

So, for the OP. New mainspring and recoil spring. If the ammunition is old, oil the stuff. I recommend this as a regular practice with 22lr and auto pistols, put a drop of oil on the top round in the magazine. I have been placing a drop on the top round, which is the 5th round, in Bullseye competition. My alibi rate had dropped because of that practice. If that does not fix the malfunction problem, try different ammunition till you find a lot that works. And buy, buy, buy as much of that lot as you can find!

I have always found that a .22 picks the ammo, not the shooter. Try Ammoseek.com, and just order it.

Midway and Natchez are sold out. Greentop Hunting & Fishing, about two hours from you in Ashland VA, says they have none for mail order, but have in store stock.
If they have enough in store, it might be worthwhile to drive up and stock up.

I have a Model 41 with Serial # 18xxx, made in 1959(2nd year of production). It is still very accurate. I mostly use CCI SV, but I have had good results with TAC-22 and Aquilla. The Tac-22 is a bit oily so I clean it every time that I use it. Once I figured out how much to aim high, I was hitting 1 ft square plates at 100 yds with it.

Might try CCI Pistol Match. More expensive than SV, but fewer problems.

I have been checking Green Top on line, it’s not worth a 200 mile trip to go there. I have found 800 rounds since I posted this. Many thanks for the suggestions.
