Bore Snakes

They work and I've used them, but there is a potential problem. If the line breaks while you're pulling one through the bore, getting it out is extremely difficult.
 
I caught an extractor the first time I used a bore snake. I do use them once in a while, but prefer one piece cleaning rods.
 
I've used various pull through cleaners, mainly US military surplus ones and modern made Otis. Fine for a quick field cleaning, especially when I was shooting corrosive surplus ammo. Never messed with the bore snakes, they always seemed like a hyped up version of a pull through that just carries all the crud you've cleaned out back through the bore. With a pull through I change the patch for a fresh one each time it goes through the bore. For serious cleaning I have several good heavy duty, one piece rods at my bench in my workshop. Also have a number of take down rods but can't remember the last time I ever used one of them.
 
Bore snakes do an acceptable good job, and are especially useful in the field. It is essentially the modern 'pull-thru', which was the most widely used bore cleaning device in military service during the 20th century. Cheers
 
I have been using them for years also. I have used them on rifles, shotguns, handguns, they do an adequate job, are easy to clean, and I have never worn one out. Detailed cleaning is seldom necessary. I do not use them for cleaning BP shotguns, as the heat from BP, or equivalents leave a "snakeskin," of plastic in the bores and I find a brush cleans this out better.
 
I used this one but after 8 or 9 times it got soft and didn't do much to clean the 12 gauge. It also began to stink so much I had to leave it on the porch. Guess I will have to find a new one.

Gotta be careful which end you grab to pull through the bore on that one.

I know a lot of people like and use them but it just seems to me that you're dragging debris and fouling back through the chamber and barrel over again with each pass .....almost like reusing toilet paper I think !
As you might have guessed I am not a fan of them .
If I just want a quick cleaning I'll use a patch on a pull through and replace with a fresh patch after each pass.
While they seem to be quite popular they're not for me.

I think some reused TP during the Covid-19 debacle.
