45 auto rim anyone?

Looking for accurate pleasant load for 625-10.

Can use cast lead 200-250 g or FMJ 230.

Preferred W231 5.1 in 45ACP but that has not been available locally for a year.

Been using HP38 but that seems gummier & dirtier at same load level.

Never have loaded Auto Rim before.

250-255 grain lead SWC over 6.3 grains of Unique is wonderful in my World War I .45 revolvers. Pleasant, accurate, and hits to point of aim. Gives similar performance to factory .45 Colt ammunition since muzzle velocity is 830 fps from the 5 1/2-inch barrel.

If you are looking just to punch paper, an H&G #68 or #130 with 4.0 grs of Bullseye or equivalent shoots extremely well in my 625's (.45 ACP/Auto Rim).

HP38 is identical to Win 231 (Hodgdon is now showing identical results in pressure barrels). The only difference at ANY time has been lot #'s.

My pre-25 prefers 6.0 grains of Unique with the 452424 255 grain SWC. I've also had good loads with 4.0 grains of Bullseye and a H&G 68.

I've used over 3# of HP38 in the last few months. It smokes more that I thought it should. Pleasant enough at 5.1g, and seems accurate if I do *MY* job....*kaff*kaff*.....

I can find Bullseye here at times, never have used it; Unique is hard to find these days.

So Auto Rim is just fine to go with ACP loads?

I know this won't help too much because you don't have 231, but if you lay your hands on some, that 5.1 grain load with a 200 swc is sweet. A friend of mine used to load some in auto rim for 45 acp wheelguns and it's incredibly accurate and easy on recoil.

I know this is hard to come by, but a year ago a local gun shop had 17 boxes of PMC 200 swc 45 Auto Rim. Well after some negotiating, I bought all 17 boxes (50 rounds each) for $17.00 a piece.

That PMC auto rim load is dead on accurate in my 625-10 and my 325SC.

The other loads mentioned are nice, but recoil climbs with 230-255 grain bullets. I prefer the 200 grainers.

I like SR4756 for those 45AR loads. Mine are a bit hotter than most though, a 240gr LSWC doing 1100fps out of a 4" barrel!

Other than that, any target load for the 45ACP will give excellent results in the 45AR.

What is nice is that you can "BEEF" them up a tad because you don't have to worry about beating your auto's action all to smithereens.

4-5gr of Bullseye for the H&G #68 is a really nice load. Some folks, like bmcgilvray just can't seem to get away from Unique. ( I think he has stock! )

The first 2 reloads are 200gr loaded over AA#5. They're loaded in .45acp brass, but auto-rim brass can be substituted without to much difficulty. The other 3 are loaded in auto-rim brass with heavier bullets over Ramshot True Blue, which I prefer for serious social occasions.

I use Clays, very clean and no left over powder in case. I have used accurate No. 5, WN231, unique. I'll never use anything but Clays. I load 200 lead with 4.0 of clays. oldtimer

The last 2 bullets are from Northwest Custom Projectile. High-Performance Bullets by Northwest Custom Projectile. Both are 260gr JHPs.

5.8 grains hp-38, Fed 150 primer, under 200 lrnfp, ar cases. Hp-38 can be accuracy sensitve to slight powder charge differences. It has been said hp-38 and 231 are now the same, including coating.

The only advantage to Auto Rim brass is its preventing your accidentally using it in your semiauto. Other than that, I have come to the conclusion that it serves no other real benefit whatsoever. Common ACP brass can be loaded to some surprisingly high velocity and pressure levels with the heavy bullets and a taper crimp and the bullets do not jump the crimp.

Oh, I almost forgot about one other reason. Maybe you have one of the new "improved" 625s that do not fire loose rounds of ACP. Then you'd have another reason for using AR brass.

I'm with oldtimer. 200gr lead bullet and 4 gr of clays shoots clean, to POA and with little recoil. I use the same load in ACP.
FWIW, i like the round nosed flat point bullets commonly marketed for the long colt. The load fast like a round nose but leave a better (for these old eyes) hole in the target.

The 200 grain Lasercast RNFP performs very well in my 625 with 5.8 grains of W231 or 5.0 grains of Trail Boss.

With a 200 SWC and 5.8 gr of W231, my 25-2 shows a definite accuracy preference for AR brass versus ACP brass in a full moon clip.

I use a 200 gr. full wadcutter bullet (mold from NEI) over 4.0 gr. Bullseye. This load will chew a single 10 shot ragged hole from a Ransom rest @ 50 yds.using my Model 25-2.

I use 200 Lswc Magma mold, cast hard. I've had luck with Unique or Bullseye. Often I don't bother with AR cases, though I load them interchangeably. With my 25-2, they flick out with a fingernail.
I have 225 L Flat Point also but usually save them for unthroated Semi Autos.

I keep my 45AR loads quite mild for my Brazilian 1917s. 5.5 grains of Unique under a 200 grain RNFP. That bullet is usually used for Cowboy Action shooting in 45 Colt rifles, but I like it in the 45AR. Very mild load. And the reason I like the AR case is because I don't like moon clips and the extractor will extract AR cases, it will not extract 45ACP cases.

Use any target load you would feed your fav. 45acp. Works fine in my 625.
