Default Mold storage

It's bullet pouring weather, I have a lot of molds. I just pulled
out the large plastic boxes they are stored in. The molds are in
separate boxes, wrapped in wax paper. A couple molds have a
very fine coat of rust. Never had this happen before, must have been the unseasonal humid summer. I never oil or wax molds
for storage. These are cleaning up very easy with light rubbing
with 4/0 steel wool. I need some advice on what to put on these
for storage. I have herd certain oils will penetrate pours and
cause problems with quality of your cast.

I leave the last bullet molded in the mold. Never had any rust on the inside, but then I do live in West Texas.

I store my molds in air-tight Lock-n-Lock containers that I got at Rite Aid. I disassemble my molds after use and lightly coat them with oil--except for the actual cavities. Haven't had any rust on them yet.

The 2-cup size is big enough for my 4-cavity Mihec molds.

Same here, light rust on the outside doesn't mean much to me.

I just spray them with "Sheath" or "Corrosion X" anti rust spray. Stored some for years like that, no issues. A quick dousing with brake cleaner will remove all the oil before casting.

Put a couple of mothballs in the containers. They will eventually go away and it will be necessary to replace them, but the fumes the mothballs give off will preclude the moulds rusting.

How about vacuum packing them with a FoodSaver or other such device? That would lock out any airborne moisture.

I do not have molds for casting bu I have a big roil of VCI paper. I use it to wrap guns in the safe and tools. It emits a rust proof barrier, Put it in a plastic bag or box and you are good to go.

Like this. You can search and find it cheaper or lesser amounts.

I have purchased molds that have rust under an existing bullet. I live in a dry climate and leave my in a desk drawer. I do coat them with used motor oil if I sell and ship one.

I put Eezox on my mold when they are going to be stored away. Then put the boxed mold in my safe.
The safe has a golden rod and dessicants.
This has worked for me.
And considering where I live.....

If you live in high humidity, you need to oil the molds imo, unless you use rust inhibiting agents in a sealed container, but i would still put a thin oil on steel molds in high humid. One advantage of quality alum molds.

I store my iron molds in a vapor-tight ammo can, along with a package if desiccant. No rust ever.
