Default CCI vs Remington Small Pistol Primers

Since I can not find any Winchester SPP, I am looking at CCI or Remington as a few places have them in stock (on line). Winchesters always worked and insert a little easier.

I have used CCI and found them to be fine for my needs but never tried Remington. Has CCI changed? are they any softer now? Any comments or suggestions?

I do not have any real light action guns so I do not need real soft Federal type primers.

Actually have been using Wolf primers but just opened a new case with different lot number and have a lot of failure to ignite. I wrote Wolf, but seems they were taken advantage of by people claiming they had bad primers and they offered refunds which they are no longer doing. I can't ship them back and Wolf will not pick them up. Appears I am stuck with 5,000 primers which may or may not work sometimes.

I still use some of the old plated Winchester small pistol primers and they seem tougher to ignite than newer CCI, which I also have. I have heard some shooters say that newer CCI is not as hard as the older CCI, but I don't know if that's true or not.

I recently tried some PMC .357 Magnum rounds, possibly the older Starfire. I was shocked that one round needed three hits DA to fire and another needed two. Is it possible that PMC at one time used CCI primers?

I never tried Wolf but I would if I can find a small quantity.

CCI - Tens of thousands of rounds and never had one fail to go bang.

For most of my loads, and especially with small pistol, I use whatever I have. Fed, Win, CCI, doesn't matter. They all go bang and that's all you need for the average target pistol load.

CCI primers are just a hair bigger, and Speer brass has a slightly larger primer pocket to match. I only use CCI primers on Speer cases or older cases that have loose pockets. That said, I've never had any trouble with them in other cases, except S&B.

I recently used some Rem small pistol for some 9MM when I ran out of CCI and could only find Rem. The loading performed identically.

I use Rem, Win, CCI and Federal - - interchangeably. Maybe i an just a Philistine, with no finesse or discernment , but they all work for me with no difference.

I use Remington almost exclusively because I also use Remington brass whenever possible. I cannot honestly tell any difference in the performance of primers from any of the major manufacturers, but there is a difference in the fit of the primers. I stopped using CCI years ago because they were a VERY tight fit in almost every case regardless of manufacturer. I have never noticed that difference in any other brand of primer.

+1

I interchange primers often with whats readily available at the time. I've yet to have a priming/pressure/accuracy/or ignition problem.

I use mostly Winchester and CCI primers but if all I could find was Remington I would hesitate to buy and use them.

As I mentioned before, I agree with the tight fit issue. However, I looked up the CCI site a little while ago, and they now advertise their primers as "new, easier to seat design" or something similar. Since CCI primers have a nickel coating, I suspect that they did not account for this previously, whereas now they do. (I hope that made sense.)

I bought most of my primers at least five years ago, and I'm glad that I did. The prices began to climb shortly thereafter.

I don't know this for a fact but in my limited loading experience it seems like the cci primers leave the pocket a little cleaner than other primers do.

Thanks for that information on the "new, easier to seat design!" Now I will take CCI off my never-buy list. I could never understand why they insisted on producing primers that didn't seem to fit anything.

Both Remington and CCI make excellent primers. I preferred Winchester for my 40 S&W semi auto loads so I could readilly distinguish them from the Federal primed 40 S&W revolver loads.

Let me start by saying I use CCI primers almost exclusively...mostly because they are available. None the less, they are (or at least were) harder than Winchester and Remington. I have a mod 60-4 that simply will not ignite them reliably in spite of a new hammer spring.

My experience with CCI: on PPC revolvers, they definitely need more punch to ignite than Federal, so potentially more misfires during competition. On 9mm semi-auto, not a problem since the slide return gives more punch than the hammer of a revolver tuned for PPC :-) CCI is also a tad bigger than Federal, so a Federal primer goes in easier in a .38 special Winchester brass than a CCI ( I use the RCBS hand priming tool). Never tried the Remington primers yet.

I have experienced problems with Remington in one important match. I have never gone back and probably won't. I realize that their products must generally be competitive or they wouldn't still be around. I use Winchester primers exclusively. I do have some CCI if I ever need 'em.

I use either Winchester or Remington primers, interchangeably.

In hundreds of thousands of rounds, I've never had either fail to ignite.

I've used some CCI, but found them a little harder to seat fully.
