Default Reloading lead 10mm for the 610

I have a 4" 610 that suffers from terrible accuracy with all manner of factory ammunition.

I'm looking to work up an accurate plinking load, using Missouri Bullet Company's lead 180gr TCFPs and HP-38.

The problem is I can not find any published load data for lead on Hodgdon's website and I do not want to blow up the gun.

Does anyone have recommendations on an accurate lead load? I'm looking for something which will be pleasant shooting and accurate.

Lyman #48 shows lots of load info for the 10mm and 175gr cast bullets, but no HP38 data.

I use a 175gr hardcast LTC bullet with 6.6gr WSF in my 1006 for a clean, pleasant and accurate plinking load. Velocity is around 1100fps. Max load according to Lyman #48 is 7.0gr WSF.

HP-38 is pretty fast for 10mm, they do show 5.2-5.9grs for 180gr jacketed bullets. You might want to look more towards Unique or Universal for lead. I've used 6.0grs Unique with a 175gr LSWC that ran 1020fps in my 5" semiauto gun.

I shoot that same MBC bullet in a 4" 610-3. For bullseye shooting I use this load:
MBC 180gr. TCFP
Starline brass
WLP primer
6.0 gr. of VN-340
1.260" overall cartridge length.

I have also tried Unique, Universal, and starting loads of Blue Dot for 10mm target loads. The VN-340 load produces the best accuracy with that 180gr. lead bullet. Blue Dot is a close second. Keep in mind that even at mild load levels, the 10mm is a high pressure cartridge. This cartridge prefers powders with a medium burn rate. In my 610, the above load clocks just under 1000 fps, essentially like shooting 40 short and weak in your gun. If you are getting poor accuracy from your 610, I would have a competent gunsmith look it over, especially the muzzle crown. I have never seen a 610 that is not a decent shooter. My 4" 610 will keep the above load inside of 3" at 50 yds.

Awesome, thank you both this was exactly what I've been looking for.

I've picked up a copy of Lyman's 49th edition, some WSF powder and have a pound of vv n340 en-route.

I am curious if there is a rule of thumb for reducing jacketed load data for lead.

If you don't wish to load the 10, try this 40 load:

155gr LSWC Moly-coated bullet (Bear Creek)
5.0gr Unique
WW 40 Brass
WW LP Primer

Very mild recoil and exceptionally accurate.

I have a 4" 610. It will shoot one ragid hole at 15 yards from a rest. I use 40 s&w brass, 180gr hard cast lead in front of 3.9 gr TITEGROUP with what ever primers I can find, even small rifle primers show no difference. The rounds clock at 900fps. I suspect your gun will do the same with the right load for it. They are sometimes like women. You have to find what load makes them happy.

At least that is what I was thinking before I actually loaded some 38/40 RNFP bullets into my 10mm brass!

The driving band kept them from chambering all of the way and I had to go to some pretty short OALs. I did load a 200gr LTC in them though and used AA#7 for the loads.

There isn't a 40S&W load that you cannot shoot in the M610 though. So, give one of them a try.

The 14th Edition W-W Reloading manual does not list data for W-231 with 180 gr. lead bullets. It does however list pressure tested data for 170 and 200 gr. lead bullets. PM me with your e-mail and I'll send you the page.
I have only used either plated or jacketed bullets in my S&W610 with mild loads of WST.
