Default Powder for .270 accuracy loads

I am beginning to handload for .270 Winchester. I have 130 grain Sierra Spitzer Bullets on hand and would like to use them. What would be your recommendation for powder to give best accuracy.

Thanks in advance.

H-4831 or IMR-4350. There are others also as this cartridge is pretty easy to load for. I do believe that Jack O'Connor's favorite for this bullet was 60.0 grains of H-4831 but work up to this charge as it is at or very near maximum in most rifles.

I've got to vote for IMR 4831 or H-4831SC as these powders have been far better in my .270 than anything else.

4831 is the old time favorite for the 270 Win. Jack O'Connor praised it from 1950s era. I have burned a bunch of it , would use SC now because it meters better. Usually has good accuracy too.

The best groups I got with the one I had was with the 130 gr Speer "Spitzer" and 60 gr of H4831. It gave me 1-1 1/2" groups consistently at 100 yards. That will vary depending on rifle, barrel and bedding. Sometimes Ive had rifles that did better if I tore off part of a match book and put it just a few inches back of the forend tip of the stock. It sort of gives it a pressure point.

Another vote for 4831. I prefer H4831, but IMR 4831 works great too.

A friend used H4831 for many years but for the past few years he switched over to H4831SC. He said it meters better because it's short-cut.

I have had the best luck with IMR 4350 and/or IMR4064. One thing I found with the 270 Winchester is that fir whatever reason mine sure seemed to be the most accurate or shoot the smallest groups with maximum loads and 130 grain bullets. Also, very important to keep the bore clean. Good shooting.

My .270 Win rifle is a Handi-Rifle with a fixed 4x scope.

After working up a good H4831SC load for it, I can manage shooting <1.5" cold shots @ 100 yards with regularity. I'll take that from a Handi and a 4X scope.

H4831SC is great with this cartridge.

Depends on your gun. For mine with a 20" barell IMR 4350 works great. YMMV

From Jack O'Connor years ago.

"...if you are printing some of my .270 loads, one I use a lot is 62 grains of 4831 in Winchester-Western cases with the CCI Magnum primer. I have just checked my figures with that load with the 130 grain Nosler bullet in three .270 rifles. In two Model 70's with 22" barrles. One gave 3130 and the other 3210 fps. In a custom .270 with a 24" barrel the velocity velosity was 3225. I have never had pressure taken with the Nosler bullet but with Winchester Silvertip 130 grain bullet the pressure was only 44,000" lbs." NOTE: BURN RATES MAY BE CURRENTLY DIFFERENT - CHECK CURRENT LOAD DATA!

From Ken Waters:

Most accurate 130 grain bullet = 130 grain Sierra Spitzer, 57.0 grains IMR 4831, 3,064 fps, case = R-P, O.A. Ctg Lgt = 3.33"

Most accurate 150 grain bullet = 150 grain Sierra Spitzer, 57.0 grains WW 785, 2809 fps, case = R-P, O.A. Ctg Lgt = 3.33"
NOTE: BURN RATES MAY BE CURRENTLY DIFFERENT - CHECK CURRENT LOAD DATA!

Hope this helps.

I have used 54.5 gr IMR 4350 behind a Nosler 130 balistic tip BT and Speer 130 BT with a winchester large rifle primer in a 24" barrel Parker Hale 1200. Will shoot sub M.O.A day in and day out.

I like the Reloader family of powders. RL 19 has been very good in most 30-06 family cartridges for me.

Reloader 22 if you have a heavier bullet and enough barrel to burn it all.

They meter much better and deliver load densities as good as the extruded powders.

Those guys are a huge help. Very knowledgable, but... I can tell you right now what they will say. They will first and foremost say that their manual lists XXXXX powder as the most accurate. Nothing you can't figure out by looking in the Sierra manual and dropping down to the "accuracy load" notation.

I would suggest calling them and asking to talk to a tech that regularly uses a .270. I called them twice with questions about their 65 grain GK for my AR. The second guy I talked to had hands on experience and used it for one of his kids to hunt with. He was a lt more of a help than the first guy I talked to that basically gave me a "from the book" answer.

Maximum vel in my win 70 came with imr 4350, best fac Dup load accuracy came with 49 grs of 4064, a little less than O'Conners top load and imr 4831 at 53 grains at 2600 +/- would place 4 @ .61 all day long at 100 yards and drop deer with minimal meat damage.

After 40 years the old barrel does better with 140gr with
48 grs of imr 4064 and a cci mag primer. Last target back in 11/9/08 had 4 @ .52 at 100 yards. oal 3.35" in "MY" rifle.

If you swap ammo, make sure it is at factory OAL.........

It ain't a bad thing. People still load for rifles.

Proves that some still aren't too lazy to use the search feature.

I'm sorry, I can't agree. If someone new to this forum wants to discuss their 270 reloads there's nothing wrong with starting a new thread instead of bringing back a thread that's been dormant for 2.5 years.

We'll agree to disagree.

Advice on such things doesn't usually become outdated in a couple of years?

I'm always proud to see someone discover the search feature.
