Default 500 special reloading

I recently started reloading for my 500. I have a few corbon 500 special cases laying around but can't find much reloading info on it. Has anyone tried to reload the specials? If so what kind of specs did you use on it?

Thanks guys

Well, uhit, I can give you one safe load for just about any straight walled pistol cartridge, 32 to 500. Mark the case where the base of the bullet will sit when the round is completed and fill it to there with Trail Boss. Safe round, at least according to Hodgdon Tech Support!

Other than that, you are going to have to do some digging or call the powder manufacturer's technical support.

Thanks crazy i'll have to make a few phone calls. I also have a second question. I reloaded a few hornady once shot shells with hornady bullets and i noticed that where the bullet is in the casing you can rub your fingers up the brass and feel a slight bulge. I checked it against the factory hornadys I have and they do not have the bulge. It still chambers in the gun just fine. It's not overly tight or anything. Any ideas why i'm getting the bulge? And is it safe to shoot?

The "bulge" as you call it is a good thing. Of course, too much of a good thing can be bad, take cookies as an example!

All kidding aside, the reason your cases bulge is because the sizing die you have is small. Again, the added tension is a good thing. Case tension should hold the bullet in place and the crimp only aid in ignition, kinda.

Unless you are using the wrong size bullet, like .510" or something crazy like that, you are good to go. Lead bullets are usually .001" or more bigger than jacketed and will cause a more pronounced "bulge".

In my opinion, and I wish I could see some of your rounds, the bulge shouldn't be an issue. At least not from what I can see!

Default 500 Special ?

I do not wish to give a load, but I have found published reduced loads
using Power Pistol powder and have had very good luck.
I shoot Berrys Plated bullets, 350 grain with the manuals starting load for a 350 grain bullet , and have found it to be very accurate and great to shoot.
I have a four inch 500 and did not want fireballs, so I was looking for a faster type powder. I tried Tite group too in a published load , did not like as well.
I believe it would surpass a Trail Boss load , but is far under any Factory
500 magnum load.
Be safe .

I have the hornady manual and have read the entire book. Nowhere in it does it cover anything about either of my questions. I resized the cases with the RCBS die set. I also double checked and the bullets are the correct size for the case. Thanks for all the help guys!

Well, I don't have any experience with the .500 special, in fact I don't even have any experience with the .500 magnum as I have never seen a cartridge. But I do have experience with the .50 AE and if the case length and capacity of the .50 AE is about the same size, or smaller, than the .500 special, I'd start there.
