Some jamoke stole my 38/357 dies. Is it out of the question to use a 9mm decapping die on my 38 brass? I got a lot of it needing decapping, and I can't get a 38/357 set just yet.
Thanks for any response.

Yes, out of the question!

At the very least a 9x19mm is a tapered case and a .38Spl/.357Mag is a straight walled case.

Just a minute now.

Some reloading die brands have the decapping pin in the sizing #1 die, and others have the decapping pin in the expanding #2 die.

If your 9mm die set has the #1 sizer/decapper, then the answer is NO.

If your 9mm die set has the #2 expander/decapper, then the answer is YES.

I would think that the 9mm expander/decapper die would not work either as the 9mm being much shorter than either the .357 or .38 would have the expanding portion hitting the case mouth well before the decapping pin punches out the primer.

Best to have a universal depriming die that will do all calibers, including rifle as long as you have the proper shell holder.

You could of course always try it and see if it works.

Since you don't need an expander die that touches the .38 case any larger diameter die with a smaller expander and decapping function will do IF your press has good feel and you go about it carefully so you don't bend the decapping rod or pin missing the flash hole. Dies such as .30-06 sizers will do.

how did somebody steal your dies?
that's all they took?
very odd.

sorry to hear...i just picked up a set of new dies for the .38 but won't be able to use them until we move and I can set up my bench again.

Can you go pick up a universal decapper/deprimer die? I use one to just deprime and then toss into the tumbler when done from the range.

38 dies

I didn't say that's all they took. They were in my locked shed, along with most of my power tools.
Very strange indeed.
