Default 10mm reloading

So I just purchased a 10mm and I'm of course going to reload for it, that's what we do LOL.

I've purchased 180 gr. Hornady XTP's and 180 gr. Hornady FMJ FN.

I dove into the 9mm and 45 ACP reloading a few years ago but before that was strictly 38/357, 44 mag, 45 LC. So I'm kinda new to semi-auto reloading.

Any powder preference suggestions?

I'm a big fan of Accurate Arms #9 aka AA9. Hornady's reloading guide has some good recipes. I'm currently loading 14 gr AA9 for my 610 revolver as a hunting load using 180gr jhp's.

I load A #9 under coated 200 gr SWC and A #5 under 170 gr coated SWC.
Is there a particular reason you only buy jacketed bullets?

I typically use Blue Dot and Power Pistol for both my .40S&W and 10mm loads. Works well with 155 and 180 grain JHP's. If you've a mind for a really kick-butt 10mm round, try a 155 grain JHP with 12.5 grains Blue Dot. From a 5" barrel you'll get around 1425 fps.

Oh I've used plenty of lead reloading for revolvers. But I've only dipped a very small toe into lead for semi-autos. I've always assumed, incorrectly I guess? that there would be feeding issues with lead in semi-autos.

Perhaps I should try some more out?

I've got a couple lbs. of Blue Dot. I'll probably give that a try

Be sure to do a firm taper crimp on your 10mm loads, especially on the hot end of the range; they're more prone to set back than 9mm.

What 10mm did you buy? I had a 2nd Gen G20 for 25 years, sold it and got a Ruger SR 1911 in 10mm. I decided to go the 1911 route on my semiautos, with no regrets.

Maybe once upon a time but magazine feed lip geometry has been refined and tolerances are much better now.

Get you a mold and start casting! I have sent thousands of home grown powder coated lead alloy rounds down range from my auto loaders with out feeding issues.

Springfield XDM elite came with six 16 round mags and I jumped on it.

I hope the grip isn't to much for my not so big hands. I'm a giant 1911 style fan. I was considering a Rock Island single stack 1911 10mm among others.

I got tired of all the research and pulled the trigger on the Springfield.

I've resisted doing my own casting for quite some time now. I'm going to take the plunge now I guess.

Seems to me lead bullets are getting harder to come by. I'll just start making my own.

You won't regret it. I have 3 SA 1911's and the performance and workmanship is great. Factory service, should you need it, is also great.

Good choice. Does the Elite offer the same different size grip panels the pre-Elite models did?

I don't load for the 10mm but a good shooting buddy of mine does. He used to use nothing but HS-7 but since it was discontinued and then he ran out of it he changed over to AA#7 instead. He is very happy with it. If you have any give that a try along with the Blue Dot tests you are going to do.

Good luck, keep us updated.

I haven't had any issue finding cast boolits at the usual reloading webpages. Not going to find it locally though.

I cast most of mine and switched to powder coating the boolits. It is fairly easy to apply and you won't regret it.

At the present time I do not personally own a 10mm: I do, however, reload for a friend with a couple.

We have found Accurate #5 & #7, Longshot and CFE-Pistol to be good powders for this caliber, with Berrys Thick Plated bullets (165 & 180gr) great for practice/range loads.

Cheers!

I use lead slugs for practice that are very close in weight and velocity to my jhp loads. Keeps the cost down. As long as you have good slug to barrel fit leading is really not a concern. Of course if you're shooting lead it's good to check your barrel every so often. My Lee mold Conical nose bullets feed very well in my Dan Wesson razorback.

Coated baby!
Costs only ~ 1¢ per bullet more, is clean on your hands and dies and does not lead the barrel!

I use the same Hornady's as you and I am loading w 9gr of Power Pistol. It seems to be a good solid load so far. I am shooting a RIA 1911 and Glock Gen 5 Model 20.

What is the best powder for the 10mm auto? Seems the consensus is 2 shotgun powders.

Well dig in, Son, dig in!
My hands are on the long side, I usually wear XL gloves. I found the middle size insert fits best for my hands.

So far I’ve only loaded 200 grain coated TC’s over AA#9. Very happy with the results.

200gr Acme TC
11.4gr AA#9, 1.25” COAL, Win LP

5” 1911: 1087fps

Not gonna give the powder weight, but my 200 gr WFNGC boolit using Longshot in my 5" 1911 is clocking at 1210FPS. It is also one of the most accurate loads in that gun.

200 grains at 1210 fps is quite a thump when it hits. You have bears or moose hiding behind your targets?

It would seem you have recently acquired a M&P 10:: what's your 1911 in 10mm and your rationale (which I am sure is most rational) for carrying it over the new one?

Cheers!

You're knocking on the door of 12.3-12.4 grains to get that velocity with Longshot. I bet that feels pretty solid when you pull the trigger. Hope the action can take it.

No, nowhere near that. It is only a few tenths over published max, that is several grains over max. Not sure what powder you are thinking about.

Well. Long story. Have had the P16-10mm for about 20 years. We go way back. I still haven't really wrung the M&P out yet nor have I tried the 200 grain cast in it yet. Still aggravated at S&W telling me the raised metal on the breech face was "cosmetic". That cosmetic metal is leaving a clear line across the case and primer. Also, I have night sights on the P16, haven't found any to put on the M&P yet.

I can't speak on the S&W but I can tell you this Springfield with 16 in the mag and one up the pipe is HEAVY. It's gotta be pushing if not heavier than my loaded 1911.

I think I'm going to check into shoulder holsters for woods carry. I'd say it would be hard to keep my pants up,lol, trying to carry it from belt hunting mushrooms or whatever in woods.

Taking her out right now for a factory ammo test. Reloading components supposed to be getting here tomorrow, can't wait.

No doubt. The P16 is the heaviest auto pistol setup I have. I have shoulder holster for cold weather when I need overcoat, but wear on hip with Serpa paddle during warmer weather. I do have to cinch belt up to keep my pants on. Just weighed it. 3 lbs 5.4 ounces just loaded gun. 3 lbs 10 ounces in holster. Didn't realize it was that heavy.

Question

rosewood: did you do the P16 conversion yourself?

Cheers!

I would suggest you look into Simply Rugged Holsters. You can pick the holster you like and add the Chesty Puller system to wear the rig across your chest. Very easy to carry and easy access if needed. (IMO of course)

Yes. I ordered a barrel from Olympic Arms I think, it was pretty much a drop in. Only took some minor fitting.

However, I did find out that years later Para actually sold them in 10mm, although I never have seen one myself. I guess I converted mine during the 40 S&W years where 10mm had lost favor, but it has flipped now. I was a 10mm fan when it wasn't cool.

Ok, so I received my 10mm bullets, cartridge gauge, and taper crimp die today. I already had 40S&W dies. And after getting mower fixed and grass cut I got to get my reloader set up for 10mm.

Yeeee Haaaaa new caliber. First time in awhile. I started out with 155 gr Hornady XTP's in front of a milder charge of CFE Pistol. It's supposed to rain most of day tomorrow here. More time to get more test loads ready.

But hopefully Sunday I'll get some trigger time and I'm gonna set up the chronograph and see what's cooking.

We have been loading 10mms since the 1980s. For years used Blue Dot and it worked well. I kept the loads in the middle range because it seems Blue Dot peaks in pressure quickly as you get near maximum. Now we use Power Pistol exclusively. It gives great performance, better accuracy than anything else we ever tried, and no pressure issues.

95% of all my 10mm reloads are with 170 gr cast truncated cone bullets. They run like a waterfall through my 1006 and 1911 in 10mm.

I only have a few drops and a sneeze of Power Pistol left. Hoping to get my hands on some soon.

That's a nice shooter there. I'm sure recoil seems pretty mild on that SRH. I've had a 10mm itch for awhile. The cheapest way to get it scratched would be a Glock. I would doubt you could get a Glock to shoot like that at 25 yards though.

Been loading 10mm since the 80's when my PD adopted the S&W M1076 for our first auto duty pistol. Issue ammo was the '10 LITE', Federal or Remington 180 gr. JHP at ~950 fps. (this was 'pre-.40' days...)
Later, I added a Colt DE SS M1911 and have always enjoyed that more.

Anyway, to semi-duplicate the 10 LITE, loaded 175 gr. LSWC's over 5.5 gr. of WW231.
Hunting loads, i.e, 'real 10mm' have been Hornady 180 gr XTP over a max charge of AA-9. Shoots great.

I looked for a 610 and a 1006 for a long time. Both are great guns but it seems collectors are buying them up making them hard to find and expensive if you do find something. Anyway I see a P220 Sig and a Ruger SRH both in 10mm during my travels and bought them both. Both are tanks, especially the SRH, and both shoot great. I would still buy a 610 or 1006 but now only with the right deal.

The Sig feeds lead SWC without issue. I had a 1911 in 10mm for years and it too fed SWCs with no problems.

I load & test more 165gr bullets than I do 180gr but the best powders are pretty much the same for either.

I like Power Pistol, Long Shot, Blue Dot & AA#7.

Anything faster than Power Pistol or slower than AA#7 is out of the sweet zone for the 10AUTO.

Power Pistol & Blue Dot have lots of muzzle flash but not Long Shot or AA#7.

AA#7 is quit a bit slower than Blue Dot in the 10AUTO:
B-D @ 12.0gr = 1382mv
AA#7 @ 12.0gr = 1292mv

Here are my max loads as tested in my 1006.

(The best load, AA#7, gains ~110mv & ~120me in my 8" CMMG Banshee compared to the 5" M1006.)

CAUTION: Some of these loads are above published maximums. Work up slowly. Use at your own risk.

Ok, so I got a bit of trigger time in with the 10mm and the chronograph today:

S.A. XDM 10mm 4.5 in barrel 5 shot groups

1. 155 gr. Hornady XTP 8.4 grs. CFE pistol CCI LPP
Avg. velocity 1304, low-1293 high-1321

Liked this load, shot way high though on target.

2. 155 Hor. XTP 8.8 grs. CFE Pistol
Avg. velocity 1342 low-1308 high-1364

Didn't seem like much gain for more recoil and muzzle blast.

3. 155 Hor. XTP 6.5 grs. W231 CCI LPP
Avg. velocity 1162 low-1151 high-1169

Seemed very mild compared to CFE pistol. Grouped well but again everything is high.

4. 155 gr. Hor. XTP 6.9 grs. W231
Avg. velocity 1210 low-1197 high 1232

I believe CFE pistol might be the one for me with 155 gr hollow points. I think 1300 FPS will do me. Not sure I want to try and wring out 100 FPS with Blue Dot or something?
