HELP!!! I haven't a clue what went wrong
So there I was, at the bench loading up some new 45 rounds when something just didn't seem right.
The case seems okay
it's sized just fine.
The flare seemed perfect.
the crimp seems right, but when I go to load them into a mag I can only get one to fit, then the mag no longer fits in the 1911.

Have you tried the plunk test?
You may need to trim a little off the case.

The problem is obvious - your magazine is too short.

Obviously a failure of the pistol manufacturer to maintain the proper tolerances. Fortunately we have the internet to straighten em out.

Some good suggestions but I think everyone is off . . . .
It's pretty obvious that you don't have your seating die adjusted correctly . . . that slug needs to be seated MUCH deeper into the case . . .
and stop using those cheap off brand magazines . . . they always cause problems . . . . :-)

It's a problem with the frame of the gun. Get out the Dremel tool and get to work.

Easy - too much powder - just compress until it fits. Expect a slight leading problem.

I use the same load. They work fine in my Glock 30. I tried to warn you about seat & crimping in one step, didn't I?
Thanks for the awesome post & photos. I think I cracked a rib!

Can you use a magazine stretcher? I always clamp mine in a vise and stretch them with my hammer and punch.
Caution...when stretched they usually shoot low and left.....

I'm not too worried about the low POI, I figure the dwell time in the recoil cycle will overcompensate for the drop.
the left part might take some kentucky windage

Oh I didn't overlook that
I misplaced my Fisher Price calipers (kinda hard to do since they are bright orange and sings some catchy tune ... stolen perhaps?)
so I laid the cartridge in the driveway and used my odometer instead

Yes it is a length problem! Not the ammo but rather the gun. Short ammo go's into the short gun, pistol or revolver. Long ammo go's into the long gun, such as a rifle. Remember the line from the movie The Survivalist's, short fat ammo, pistol, long skinny ammo, rifle.

Long fat ammo
McDonnalds ammo

That's funny. If recent experience has taught us anything, I would have thought Hornady would have indicated that it was an engineering problem.
My apologies to any engineers...
