Does anyone have any data on using tite groupe powder for a 175 gn. lead cast bullet. I have been reloading for over a year now and cant seam to find any books that give a recipe for this combination. I am using HS-6 now but have a couple of pounds of tite groupe I would like to use up. Any help would be greatly honored. Thank you

You are on your own as to developing a load for a lead bullet but generally lead is less than a jacketed bullet. You can use data for the next heavier bullet. For example if the data was for a 180 lead bullet you could use that for your 175 lead. Maybe just a bit more velocity. What gun are you shooting?

I do not use Titegroup so I can not say for sure but you can probably use the start load of 4.2 grs.

I was also curious why Lyman did not recommend Titegroup with lead bullets in .40 S&W.
Now that I've tried it, I agree with them.
I just bought 4# of Titegroup for jacketed loads in 9mm and .40 S&W, but if I'm going to load lead bullets I'll use HP38 instead. For your 175gr bullet, 4.3gr of HP38 is minimum to start.

The W-W 14th Edition Reloading manual and the 2005 Alliant reoading guide both list pressure tested data for 155 to 180 gr. bullets. PM me your e-mail and I'll send you the pages from both manuals.

I load a 175gr LSWC in 40 but I use Universal Clays with mine. 4.8-5.0grs runs out 960-1020fps in my guns. I tried TiteGroup but didn't care for it in 40.

Last year I worked up a load for 180 gr hard cast lead. My bullets checked at 185 gr with the lube in them. 4.1 gr titegroup using federal primers got me 964 fps from my 610. I went up to 4.5 gr titegroup with that bullet but it was a little hot. I settled for the 4.1 because I also have a M&P40c and I didn't want to use any hot loads in it. If I need more I will use 10mm brass in the 610. The .40 is already at the top of its pressure rating so going higher is just asking for trouble. The 610 has enough stringth that I felt safe working up a load.

It's not really a suitable powder for the 40. Sure, many gamers shoot it, but the narrow load range & high pressure issues w/ the 40 make it less than ideal. Many don't like TG w/ lead bullets either, it burns very hot & leading seems to be a bigger issue than w/ some other powders.
Best powder I have found for lead bullets in the 40 is Unique or WSF. Extremely accurate & the slower powders offer you more range in your reloading. I won't use TG for anything though, so I am a bit bias. I actually like to see my powder charges in the case.

Thank you all for all your input i have desided to stay with HS-6 by hodgdon instead of using the tite group just makes good sense.

I like Blue Dot powder for my cast bullets in 40S&W & 10mm...Very accurate! Really good with jacketed bullets too!

It aslo works well with 38spl/357mag, 44spl/44mag, 9mm, 357Sig, 9x25Dillon using both cast and jacketed bullets yielding great ballistic performance in the upper range.

I like that Blue Dot uses most to all of the capacity of the case. It doesn't need to have magnum primers to work well and generates enough pressure to oburate the bullet to fit the bore which helps keep leading down!

I like WSF for 175 gr cast bullets in the 40 S&W. No leading issues at all and very good accuracy. My girlfriend shot several thousand of them in a pair of Ruger Vaqueros in 38-40/40S&W at cowboy action (they were a lot easier to load than 38-40!)

HS-6 7g my go to in a steyr M40a1

I use 4.5 of TG with a 175TC cast at 965 with my M&P unless I'm using the same bullet over 3.2 TG for an IDPA load. 755 fps for 132,000 power factor.

965 fps seems like a good load for practice, feels like full power 40 to me.

IMO, that is pushing TG right to the edge w/ a 175gr lead bullet @ that charge wt. Caution. I would bet more 40s have been KB w/ uberfast powders & heavy bullets than any other reason.

I use 2.8 grains of titegroup with a missouri bullet 180 gr lead truncated cone. They run 700 fps out of a 5 inch barrel. They are slow and don't burn the lube but they seal just fine and don't lead at all. I have shot 800 of these before cleaning my gun and have never had any problems this load burns fairly clean but not as clean as clays. They do smoke a little. This is a very soft shooting load I run them through an m&p pro with a 11 lb spring and can ring steel animals everytime at fifty yards if I take my time and about half the time at 100 and im just an average shot. These will shoot 1" ten shot holes off the bench at 25 yards. The only load I use for in a 40. BTW my m&p has an apex trigger with the competition springs and it breaks at 2.2 lbs consistently and adjustable dawson sights. That does make the long range shooting easier.
