Red face 9mm Ultra

I have a Walther 9mm Ultra that has been sitting in my safe since 1985, it is unfired by me. Never had any ammo for it, but picked up a box last weekend at a local gun show. I pulled one of the 100gr bullets and it mic'ed out at .355. This is the same as the .380 round, two questions; can you fire .380 ammo in it, if not, what is the difference in the two cartridges? Anybody have one of these shooters? How do you load for it.

The 9mm Ultra is 1mm longer than the .380 auto (9mm Kurtz) and 1mm shorter than the 9mm Luger. The original loading of this Austrian round was a 100 grain FMJ at a MV of 1060 fps.
The case has a .020" rebated rim smaller than the base.
No US companies load this cartridge.

This is one of a dozen or so 9mm cartridges than use the same .355 bullets but have different brass cases.

Red face 9mm Ultra

OKFCO5 thanks for the info. I learn something everyday on this forum. Now, where do I find dies for the 9mm Ultra? I have .380 dies, could you reload fired cases by just resizing the neck with the expander die after punching out the used primer?

I've never reloded 9mm Ultra, but I've been told (by someone with all his fingers) that you use the .380 shell holder, but 9mm Luger dies, adjusted down 1 mm.
He used .355 90gr bullets and started with what would be a max load of 231 in a .380 as the load in his 9mm Ultra.
As I never tried this, all I can say is that it sounds reasonable as long as you stay well below 9mm Luger loads, which surely would be very dangerous.
Good luck!

Default 9x18 Police

I have a Walther PP Super. It uses the 9x18 Police cartridge. I believe that the 9mm Ultra is the same dimensionally, although historically they may differ. I think that the Ultra was an earlier version of the cartridge. Don't have my references here at the office. The 9x18 Makarov is a .366 caliber and not the same as the 9mm Ultra or 9x18 Police at all.

From time to time, Midway USA has the 9x18 Police available, either from Fiocchi or GECO. I have never ordered this cartridge from them, as I have a decent supply and don't shoot it much.

I have loaded the 9x18 cartridge, but it has been a while. I know that it uses the same .355 bullet as the .380. If I recall correctly, the case may be tapered, like the 9x19 Parabellum/Luger -- and unlike the .380 ACP which is straight walled. I think I loaded the cartridge in a somewhat makeshift fashion, using .380 dies, but only sizing the brass partially. Proper 9x18 dies were prohibitively expensive.

It isn't substantially more powerful than the .380 ACP, but I don't recall whether I used a .380 load exactly (likely either Bullseye or Unique). The reloads functioned fine. Sorry I don't have better details, but it has probably been 8-10 years since I played around with this cartridge. I came across some new brass for it cheap, or I probably wouldn't have fooled around with loading it.

A place called Earl's Repair Service, that specializes in German Walthers, used to have grips available for the PP Super. Mine is a used police gun and could use some new shoes, but they were too pricey.

Jeff

Default Ultra

I have the 9mm luger dies, it seems reseasonable that they would work. I will give it a try. I'm taking the Ultra out to the range this afternoon for a "shakedown cruise" to see what she will do with factory loads. Will have a box of brass tomorrow to play with.

Try the Walther Forum. A massive amount of info and Earl's is one of their suggested sources. Dave_n

The Makarov was a variation of the 9mm Ultra, if I'm not mistaken. The main difference was the bullet diameter, with the non-comblock choice going to a true 9mm instead of the .365" the Makarov used later on.

I have loaded Makarovs and 9mm Largo with 9mm Luger dies and both functioned.

Default 9mm Police/Ultra brass needed

I just joined this forum. I also have a Walther PP Super chambered for the 9mm Police Cartridge. I bought it in the early 80s but I did not obtain any ammo for it. I did buy Reloading Dies for this calibre (RCBS) also in the early 80's. Now that I am well retired I can't find any ammo. But I did not fire this weapon since I bought it. I do have plenty of 9mm Parabellum brasss, but not 9mm Police/Ultra. Anyone know where to find some. Has anyone attempted to shorten 9mm Para brass? I know the base is different. Does anyone have any ideas.
Any help would be appreciated

I noticed today that Fiocchi now sells ammunition for the 9mm Ultra.
