I have a Colt 45ACP that has a Bomar rib on the slide. I also have another slide that I can shoot any kind of ammo I want. The slide with the Bomar rib will "might" sheer off with more powerful loads. I have been loading 6 grains of 231 and using a 200 SWC bullet for the regular slide. I haven't shot this gun with the Bomar rib in years and would like to shoot it again just for fun. Using 231 powder what load would you recommend or suggest for this bullet? Don "Thanks"

5.0 to 5.5gr of 231 has always provided more than ample power for 200gr SWC's from my experience, especially just for shooting paper.
And I wouldn't worry one bit about shearing off the rib. Frankly never heard of that happening.

With the 200 grain SWC bullets I run around 4.5 grains of 231. I find out what it likes accuracy wise and then change recoil springs out if necessary to get reliable functioning. I have put 10s of thousands through a Bomar rib gun with no problems whatsoever. I found out early on that it didn't like Bullseye at all and went through 700X before settling on 230. Yes, it was that long ago. When they came out with 231 I went with that and haven't looked back or found it necessary to change powders.

I shoot 4.3 gr 231 with a 200 gr. cast bullet, and it is the most accurate load. I do use a reduced power recoil spring, 12-14 lb. in my Gold cup and it functions fine and is outstandingly accurate.

4.8 of 231 with 185 or 200 .452 swc with a 16 lb. spring will hit the same place. Is yours a 5" or 6"? I love Bomars.---JACK

Here you go Jack. The Bomar sight is on the original Colt slide a 5". A member of the Tennessee National Guard built this gun around 1980. They had some of the best gunsmiths in the military. I know one that was a gunsmith for the Olympic team. Do

With 231, try 4.3-4.8 grns under a 200gr LSWC bullet. You may need to go to a 12-14lb recoil spring to get reliable functioning. I have a rib with a slide mounted Ultradot and use these. The ultradot adds a lot of mass and stress to the rib screws and have had zero problems with this load at 4.8 grns.

I use 5gr 700X with 200 SWC

I have a 1911 National Match grade gun with a Bomar extended rib as well as a Clark 1911 hardball gun. Shoot 200 grain SWC with 4.0 grains BE in both guns. Nice 25 yard target load. Have also shot the same bullet with 4 to e.5 grains of Red Dot.

I typically like TiteGroup with 200gr. lead SWC. Loads are virtually identical to Bullseye, with a 1.2" oal.

4.6 grains to start at 800fps.
5.0 grains will get you 850fps

I have never felt a need to push one past 850fps. Bullseye maxs out at 5.7 grains (950fps) but I wouldn't get anywhere close to that, because I tend to steer well clear of max loads.
I find that 4.8 grains is pretty much perfect.

Yes it is, but it is still relevant.

And yes the screws holding the rib onto the slide will eventually shear off. I changed out bent screws yearly before they broke flush with slide. My brass ejected about 16" from the gun before hitting the ground. The next heavier spring caused stove pipes. I believe I was using the correct spring.

Believe me -- you don't want to get hit in the head by a Bomar rib. Once was enough!

I know this post is old but it is still alive. I own 6 rib guns but I don't use the heavy loads. A rib takes a lot of the recoil away. 231 loads are 4.8 and lower. 700x are 4.7 and lower. Bullseye is 4.5 and lower. American Select is 4.5 and lower. When my bullseye guns are set up right the brass ejects about two feet or so and lands in a 3 foot circle. A bullseye pistol should group close to 1 1/2" or better with 10 shots on a good rest at 25 yards if the shooter does his part. A good gun is not picky on the powder--just the charge. A midstream load or lower is what you are looking for. You can tune a good gun like a car.
