Default IS THIS A GOOD PRICE

Hi, I am new to reloading and am starting to gather all the equipment necessary to start. I will only be loading handgun ammo in 38 special at first and later on 9mm. I have decided that a Dillon Square Deal B would be best for this based on the info on this forum. There is a used one available to me set up with 3 toolheads in 38/357, 9mm and 44mag, in excellent working condition and in ready to use condition for $380. Is this a reasonable price. It has all the original assessories that came with it and the manual. The extras would be the two other calibers set up in their own toolheads. I know that I will need other equipment to get started. This is just the first piece of the setup. Thanks for any help that you can offer. Jesse.

The price new is $380 plus shipping. As it is guaranteed for life and comes with the some extras I would say yes. Are there dies for those tool heads?? They only use Dillon dies .

I of course (cheap)would offer $325 and go $350

I am sure the Dillon Smurfs can tell you more than this lonely Lee guy

About 6 yesrs ago I picked up a 550B with a load of extras and 6 caliber changes for $200 including a RCBS digital scale. That probably wasn't a typical deal however.

jsalas2,

You need to look things over again.

The Square D DOES NOT HAVE TOOLHEADS ALA THE 550-B OR 650 DILLON.

Those machines have COMPLETE TOOLHEADS that can be switched into and out of the respective machine frame. (excluding the Square D)

They can be completely set-up with dies and a powder measure ready to swap in for a caliber change.

The Square D has DIES that can be changed, but are NOT DIES STANDARD TO THE INDUSTRY, as they only fit a Dillon Square D machine.

The Dillon Square D is a nice machine to be set up for one caliber say 38 Special as in your case, mine is set-up for 45 ACP.

If your going to to be reloading different calibers look at the Dillon 550-B machine, the 650 is a full PROGRESSIVE PRESS for an experienced reloader needing a bunch of ammo.

For a more complete explaination of the Dillon equipment go to Brian Enos web site, he gives great information and photos;

I have 2 SDBs, and the SDB toolheads are on pg 7 of the Dillon catalog, item J35-20113, $30.95 each. The SDB dies are proprietary to Dillon, and stay on the toolhead when switching calibers. You can buy a separate powder measure for each caliber if you wish, but I use the same and just change the setting between calibers--pretty simple. I have 6 calibers' dies, each set up on its own SDB toolhead.

Not much of anything on the SDB fits the other Dillon presses, certainly not the dies or toolheads.

I think so.

I have a carousel of 4 SDB's mounted on a plate, then mounted to a large swivel vise. I have 4 different calibers loadable on this carousel. Loosen the set bolts on the vise and swivel to the caliber that I want and start.

I believe that the SDB machines are the hot set up for handgun calibers. (Otherwise I wouldn't have so many!) Great little tools.

The machines can be had for $200ish, the dies for $70ish each and the toolheads run $25ish each. So if you have the machine and three die set ups with the toolheads, that would add up to about $500ish for used, off of say ebay. So, yes the $380 is a decent deal. As stated earlier, you might offer a little less than that for a great deal without burning you or the seller.

If the machine is in good shape its seems like a fair price, if not a bargain.

One thing about the SD is folks often use the fact that they dont use standard dies as a negative. I dont know why that is really. The dies for the SD are well made and seem to last along time. The sizer is carbide, the crimp is appropriate for the caliber.

The cost of a conversion kit with the dies is reasonable and less than other conversions with out the dies.

The kits seem to hold value quite well.

So they arent the 7/8ths thread but they are special in a good way
