.45 Auto Rim?
Thinking about loading some .45 auto rim for my 625 and 25-2. I understand I can use .45 ACP dies, but will the dies need to be re-adjusted as I go from one to the other? i.e. will I need a separate set of .45 ACP dies adjusted specially for the Auto Rim brass?

All you need is the appropriate shell holder.

I recently loaded some Auto Rim. Someone stated I would have to readjust the sizer die...but I didn't. I was slightly cautious with the seating die, but it didn't really need adjustment.
The hard part of the whole process was finding the shell holder. It's a #13 and NOT a fast seller so most local shops don't stock them.

I believe the RCBS is #8 but most like lee are #13 as stated above.

If you want to load the heavier cast SWCs like I do for my .45 acp
revolvers make sure your seating die will apply a roll crimp rather
than a taper crimp.

Agreed, you will need a roll crimp for the heavier 255gr loads. I have a RCBS .45 ACP roll crimp die to take care of the task.

I only used light target loads i 45 AR cases. The only change required was the shellplate/shellholder. I finally sold off the 45AR cases and accessories and opted to use 45ACP with moonclips.

You don't even need moonclips. Just poke the cases out with a pencil. And no, you won't have any misfires without the moonclips.

It really depends on the gun. Some will headspace without clips and some won't. My 625 won't work at all without clips.

You can load some pretty potent rounds if you use StarLine 45 Auto Rim brass. Built to they same integrity as their 45 Long Colt brass. This is also the brass Buffalo Bore Ammunition Co Uses for there standard 45AR and +P version.

To update this thread, I bought some .45 Auto Rim brass from Starline and just loaded my first 100. I found I had to back my expander die out some (from .45 ACP setting) to avoid over-working the case mouths. The AR brass appears to be a little longer, and that is confirmed by the specs on the Starline web site.

I'm probably going to buy another cylinder for my S&W 625JM then have it fitted to the gun. After that's done I'll send it off to Clark Custom guns were it will be retrofitted to fire 460 Rowland. Then you will be able to shoot 45ACP, 45AR, and 460 Rowland. I was also told that you can fire 45 Super if you have the 460 Rowland upgrade.

I recently bought 500 Starline AR cases as well. 25-2s love the 200 gr swc with light loads of Clays, Bullseye and 231. I'm just taper crimping these.

Redding's makes a Profile Crimp die for 45 Auto Rim. Gives the case a roll Crimp just like any other rimmed case.

I really like Redding's Profile Crimp die. AFAICT it combines a mild taper crimp with a roll crimp. I know that it is very easy to adjust and seems more tolerant of variances in case length than a die giving a more abrupt crimp.

for pin shoots and other hard hittin' needs get some 270gr Penn Thunder heads.....5.0gr Unique for soft and 7.0gr for stout stuff...i run them in AR's and 45 Colt's and there very very accurate....

When reloading .45 AR I just use a taper crimp the same as I use for my
.45 ACP.
I have loaded bullets up to 270 grains without any problem in my model 1988 and 1989 S&W's.

According to Buffalo Bore you can shoot their .45 Super loads in a standard 25-2/625. The tech I spoke with has shot hundreds of rounds through his with no problems...

Once you have Clark do the .460 Rowland conversion you will be able to shoot the .460, .45 ACP and .45 AR in the same cylinder without the trouble or added expense for another cylinder

Sight adjustment was most likely necessary though!
I load 240gr LSWC bullets in the 45ACP and use moonclips that leave the 4" tube of my M625JM @ 1150fps. The shape of that bullet is indicative of the fact that they are only for that firearm as they will not chamber in any of my semi autos.
The load is a book load, albeit, from an older manual.
These were interesting. 250gr T/C Shockwave over a heapin' helpin' of Unique!
