Default Hornady Projector

Someone offered me a deal for a Hornady Projector which his Dad bought but never used. I did not ask how many shell plates are there but he said there are, at least, 2 rifle dies included. Everything offered for $300.

I have never done reloading and have received quotes directly from Dillion for their 550B and 650.

Comparing the two, the obvious difference is the price difference: about 3-4X.

Can the Projector perform anywhere close to a Dillion 550B?
I heard that one has to keep fiddling with the Projector and it is significantly more time-consuming than the Dillion.
Any other differences?
Any thots? Is there price reasonable?
I also hoping to load 45-70 caliber later but Dillion quoted me $400 to upgrade the 550B to do that.

Dillon quoted you $400 to upgrade a 550B to load 45-70? Either whoever you talked to misspoke or you heard wrong. The conversion kit to load 45-70 on a 550B runs about $45, the dies should be around $35 to $45. Now if you decide to go whole hog and get the kit with a spare tool head, powder measure and storage stand that will set you back about $100. Sooo add all that up and you get something less than $400.

By the way the Dillon 550B press should run you $429.95. That's for the press alone (with the powder measure, primer stuff and one conversion kit) dies, caliper, etc. will be extra.

As for as the Hornady Projector I've never used one but the new Lock-n-Load is a good press and the one I used didn't require any adjustments except to the dies to make the ammo the way I like it. I use a 550B for everything and highly recommend it. The 650 is a good press but is expensive and the conversion kits are expensive. Personally I don't need the slight increase in speed the 650 gets over the 550B. Also the 550 will load more calibers than the 650.
