Yep, 240 LSWC and Unique are classics for .44 Special. If you haven't shot any lead before, slug the barrel and measure the cylinder throats and use bullets of appropriate diameter. I have a favorite load for .44 Special of just under 9.0 grains of Unique and a Lyman 249421...

All the rest of Skeeter's fans must be taking their nap- 7.5 gr of Unique and your 240 SWC.
Good shooting

My go-to for the .44 Special in a SAA is Lyman No.429421 and 5.0 grains of Bullseye.

Wow, 9gr!
Sounds like a good reason to consult a manual...

Surprised nobody's mentioned 240 LSWC over 7.5 grains of Unique.
Its the classic "Skeeter Skelton" load.
It will do anything worth doing.

Well, you're right! My mistake ( this is the exact reason one should ignore any load data from any forum). I was thinking about my .44 Magnum loads. Old feller's brain phart...

I use quite a bit of Power Pistol and also 2400. I reload for a Ruger Flattop, so my loads would be a mite stout for you. 200 grain Hornady XTPs are a lot of fun in a mild load.

7.5 grains of Unique is a good all around load. Probably all you need.
6.9 Grains is a "Factory Duplication Load" with a 246 grn. lead round nose in Lyman 45.
If you have (or can get) Red Dot it's good in the .44 Special. I use 6.0 grains under a 242 grain SWC.

I gave up on Unique for my .44Special loads, I found that W231 produces better accuracy, doesn't smoke as much, burns way cleaner and meters nicer.

44 special, 240 grain cast SWC and 7.5 grs Unique. Sweet shooting and accurate. You got Unique...use Unique. We are shooting whats a little smoke...it's called "gunsmoke" it's OK.
Besides powder is too hard to come by nowdays to go trying to chase down 9 different powders to experiment with like we used to do.

Most of the smoke from that load is from the bullet lube, anyway.

Or you can do the same thing with 4.7 grains of Bullseye and Lyman No.429383.

I shoot 6.5 gr of Unique with a 240 gr SWC in my Model 24's. I'm quite happy with that load.

arjay,
6.0, 6.5, 7.0, and 7.5 grains Unique.....they're all good.
Load up some test rounds of each , go shooting and see what you like.....be sure and report back.
