Default Herco manuals

Looking for another manual to pick up and I can get herco pretty regularly here, and have some already so I'm wondering which manuals would have some 357 loads in it. I have the lyman 49th and of course Alliant online data but would like more. I like to load 158 jhp and also 125 jhp for 357. The 49th only has cast loads and the Alliant doesn't seem to offer much either.

By the way, does a starter load of 7.4 under a 158 jhp sound ok? That would be going by Alliant data.

I'm looking to make "medium" plinking loads for what it's worth. Something like the blazer aluminum stuff that does somewhere around 1000fps with a 158.

I also have some 4756 at my disposal that I might look into.

I do not know what Alliant has done with their online data but they do not even list HERCO for 357 anymore??

The only manual I have that lists Herco is Lyman CAST.

Guess it is not that popular and maybe on the chopping block?

Yeah it's hard to find much on it. I'm going to have to find older manuals but don't know where to start. I really wouldn't be surprised to see it disappear.

Thanks. That's about what I was thinking about with a starting load in those links. 8.2 max should be about 7.4 start. Seems a little hot to me but one way to find out I guess.

A few years ago Alliant moved away from using Herco in the .357 Magnum especially with light bullets. If I can remember, they were having pressure spikes with 125gr bullet loads. They went so far as to bring down the entire load data site for a few days.

I have been googling but a lot is what people are personally running in theirs. Now that is ok, but I have no idea what's near maximum for their particular load and what gun etc. But that's pretty much mostly I have to go on anyway or now I guess. I have also seen some a decent amount lower than the 7.4 that I'm going to load up, such as 6.5 under a 158 jhp that was said to be "stout". This is the reason I wanted to find some other sources because these will be shot out of an sp101 2.25" gun. They don't have to be balls to the wall.

I would just hate to stick a bullet if 6.5 is way under recommended starting loads. With that said, if anyone has any loads they have been using and don't mind sharing it'll give me more to look at. Especially if there is chrony info available.

Interesting and thanks. I guess I should be looking at using it for 158gn+ and leaving the 125gn to unique or something.

That might be wise. I usually don't buy into the panic when a company who used a powder for decades and then all of the sudden decides it's not safe but, in this case there might be something to it because no company brings their entire load data site down just to be sure they don't have dangerous data up.

Default 357 Herco loads

Sierra Manual, 5th Edition (6th printing) has a fair amount of Herco data (maybe because it was first printed in 2003). In the .357 under 158JHP they range from 7.8gr/1050fps to 9.5/1150fps from a 6"bbl. I was looking at buying some Herco, but I finally found some Power Pistol.

Herco is an old school powder, quite popular in the day for full power 9mm loads. It would be just as useful for thr 40 or any round where a medium burner can be used. The older manusla form Speer & Hornady have daya but for modern calibers, you're likely going to have to go on your own, off the books. Its a bit slower than Unqiue, about like WSF.

No modern calibers, just 357 magnum. Hopefully the next show has something as far as manuals I can look through and go from there. But I'm definitely going to grab the sierra 5th
