Finally got to field test the Cutting Edge 240 grain Raptor loads I had been working up the last 6 months.

H110 was used with WLP primer and new Starline brass for the final product.

Tested on Black bear in Idaho.

Note entry hole size. Bones was not an issue here.

I would say that is very graphic! Small fist size exit ("Wound" doesn't seem to be the right word, shall we say) "Cave". Ivan

That is the entrance hole!!! The exit was about 3/4". The round opened up too quick in this case. The hollow point petals of the Cutting edge bullet are designed to come off and the base continues as as a solid, hence the smaller exit hole.
While the results were dramatic (arterial spray was all over), this could run a lot of meat if I would have shoot the point of the shoulder. The shoot was intentionally placed back futher than I would normally shoot because we thought this might occur.

Yes that is the bullet.
Is it this bullet?? Damn that is wicked! How far was the shot and what length barrel. Details man we need details!

I was closer than expected, roughly 12 / 15 yards.and the shoot was done with a Ruger #1 (22" barrel). I will have to chrono these out os this gun but venture to say it is about 2700 fps. The 7.5" revolver I was intending on using and did the development work spits these right at 2000 fps.

Going to go pig hunting next month and plan to use the 7.5" with these and expect the entry will be less dramatic!

Don't be too surprised if your velocities come in a lot lower than you expect. A coworker has put together an AR-10 in 45 Raptor and a full load of H110 was pushing a 225 grain Hornady FTX at 2150 fps out of his 16 1/2 inch barrel. The one issue with the 45 Raptor is the case capacity is somewhat limited for the size and mass of the bullets, use a slower powder chasing velocity and you can't get enough powder to get even close to the maximum pressure for the caliber. Use a faster powder and you end up limited by that faster burn generating too much pressure too early in the barrel. Now, the good news is these bullets aren't influenced much by wind and boy howdy are they accurate, 3 shot 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards.

I get almost 2950 fps with a 200 grain out of my 22" Ruger #1.
I would caution those using bullets designed for pistols out of rifles. Those 225 FTX have a 1900 fps ceiling to work properly.
I have had some jacket separations with several different bullets when pushing them well past their intended range.
FYI the 225 FTX has a ceiling of 1900 fps above that they act like a grenade rather than a bullet on game animals.

Have your friend with the Raptor should try Reloader #7 and IMR 4227 with those lighter bullets. Lil Gun should also give good results out of the gas gun but would caution him to pay close attention to his brass, this goes for using any of the magnum pistol powders.

Thanks for the heads up on the velocity limit for the FTX, I'll pass it on. He's been hoping to get up to a 2400 fps. range for a flat shooting Whitetail load for longer ranges but from the sound of it he'll need to shop around for a different bullet. I'll have him take a look at those Cutting Edge bullets but they appear to be a bit too much for a Whitetail unless he can get a broadside shot into the lungs. Just for information purposes what powder and charge are you using for those 2950 fps loads? He's still kicking around the best powder to use and with the Raptor being so new there isn't a lot to work with.

For white tails go with a 240 or 300 XTP MAG if your a Hornady guy or the 275 Barnes. I would start with IMR 4227 and even at 1800 fps there is not a white tail that won't fall over.
I think the accuary of these guys will be as good as the FTX he is using now.

Good job. Can not wait to use mine for something other than paper.
