Default Loading S&W 14-2

I bought an old S&W 14-2 revolver few months ago as I got tired of my .32 pistol breaking and throwing shells in my face.

S&W said my revolver was made in 1964. It has some signs of use, but best price/condition combination I could find here.

Plan is to use this revolver in ISSF center fire pistol.

Some photos:

That grip looks good but does not fit in my hand. I will make a morini-style target grip during winter.

Bullets: I bought an old but unused Lyman 2660091 mould (148gr WC, double 358091 cavities) I have also ordered lee 6-cavity 358 105gr swc mould.

Powder: Vihtavuori N310 - VV powders are available here in the only local shop. Already have N310 as I use it to load .32 S&W Long WC.

Brass: Magtech (from their wadcutter loads)

Primers: Sellier & Bellot small pistol.

Dies: Redding .38special WC

I already made some test loads with 105gr wadcutters I bought. Those were cast from soft lead and sized to .357 to be used for air rifle shooting. Put 1.6-2.1gr of powder under unlubed bullet that was pushed 3mm below shell edge. Magtech factory wadcutters grouped better, but those have a lot harder recoil.

I shoot at 25m only, SA. Accuracy has the priority, less recoil is better, but it does not matter to me that much.

What kind of load would you recommend using these supplies?

I can not help on the powder as I have never used it but having both those molds I find the 148 gr WC to be the much more accurate bullet at 25m.

I'm suprised VihtaVuori doesn't list any N310 loads for 148 gr. HBWCs because it shoots great! Here's my standard load for my PPC Revolver.

Bullet: Magnus 148 gr. HBWC
Powder: VihtaVuori N310 2.6 grs.
Primer: Federal 100 Small Pistol Match
Case: Federal .38 Special
LOAL: 1.200

Six shots at 25 yards.

I would double-check the size of your cylinder throats to be sure, but since they're almost always .3580" to .3585" on Model 14's, I'd size your cast bullets at .3580".

I too have been surprised by the lack of 38 special load data for N310. As far as I know, it's in the same burn rate range as Bullseye.

I've loaded a LOT of 148gr HBWCs seated flush over 2.7gr N310(same charge as I use for Bullseye), and shot a significant number of those out of my 6" 14-1. My gun really "likes" that load. It's incredibly accurate and the recoil is mild-basically everything you could want in a target load.

I also bumped the charge up to 3.0gr to use under a 158gr LRN. The bullets I used for my trial were Hornady swaged lead, which have no crimp groove. I loaded just to the top of the knurling. This load, too, is very mild recoiling. I've shot it out of everything from a 2" Detective Special to an 8 3/8" model 27-2(and every barrel length in between), and it's consistently accurate out of everything I've shot it.

Although in general it's very bad to use load data for one powder in place of another, with the lack of 38 Special load data for VV 310, I have use low-end Bullseye data as a starting point, and don't push things. Of course, one won't generally see pressure signs in 38 special, but the felt recoil, muzzle blast, and chronograph data(i.e. a 158gr bullet at 700fps out of a 4" barrel, 775 fps out of an 8 3/8" barrel) tell me that I'm well within safe pressures by doing this. I'm not advocating that anyone else necessarily do this, but it has worked for me.

Just came home from garage. Cast some WC and SWC bullets there. IŽll make some test loads tomorrow and go test them.

HBWC = hollow base wadcutter? My bullets are not that kind..
Mould spec: Lyman Products Your Primary Source for Reloading Equipment
Lyman site says "crimped in forward band"
So it should be seated so some of the bullet is visible from side? What col that translates to?

Vihtavuori website says:
"N310
Very fast burning and competitive with Alliant Bullseye, Hodgdon HP38 and Vectan Ba 10. It has applications in a very wide range from .32 S&W Long Wadcutter up to .45 ACP."

Vihtavuori reloading manual has burn rate comparison chart (just to assist in comparing different powders).
In that chart
RWS P805, Vectan BA10 and Hodgdon HP38 are on same burn speed level as N310. Alliant Bullseye is listed to be slower burning than those others.

I found scanned Vihtavuori reloading manuals online:
1992: http://www.sportlovesz.hu/reload/vihta1992.pdf
1995: http://www.sportlovesz.hu/reload/vihta1995.pdf
Both have .38 special data with N310 powder.
Tried that today (148gr WC, 2.0gr N310) Better accuracy than 105gr SWC with 1.6 or 1.8gr N210 and less messy. Still not accurate enough.

I removed the cylinder from revolver.
Then pushed a bullet through each chamber throat.
Bullet sizes afterwards:
9.10mm = 0,3583"
9.09mm = 0,3579"
9.09mm = 0,3579"
9.09mm = 0,3579"
9.09mm = 0,3579"
9.08mm = 0,3575"

Do you have load data for those 105gr SWC bullets when crimped to the top groove and N310 powder in case?

My clubmate uses 5-6 grains of 3N37 (or something like that) with 105gr swc. His Colt seems to shoot well with those loads.
