Found some powder

Hit the gun show today and was surprised when some vendors had pistol powders. I've been out for mid range 357 and 44 mag loads and had a choice of HS-6 and CFE pistol. Never loaded CFE so picked up the last 2 1lb. bottles of HS-6 at $22 each. No deal but not to bad. Just before leaving I spotted 1 bottle of 2400 mixed in with the rifle powders. It was marked $26. I went back and forth with the guy and he said "give me $24 and you can have it". Again no deal, but between shipping and hazmat small online powder orders get expensive. Encouraging is I have not seen pistol powders at a show in over a year now. Maybe it's starting to come back?

At the local shops it is about non existent, the only thing seems to be H-110 here and there.

i have been seeing more & more IMR/Hodgon/Winchester pistol powders with the faster stuff selling out fast but havent seen anything alliant for awhile

The only Alliant powders I'm finding are old stock being resold, even a few cans of Hercules. All I can figure is the Hercules/Alliant plant is making explosives for the military, as well as commercial explosives for mining and such. Back in the 70's all our dynamite was Hercules, just walk in and buy a case, show your drivers lisence and walk out... try that now. Ivan

and years back, they actually made their own powders.
today, it seems they are reselling powders acquired through global sourcing.
Had it not been for this, I dont think we'd have this shortage dragging on for years like this.
I really hope that someone is taking notes.

I have to agree I live in NJ and dealers here are crazy like 46.00 for 1000 primers 30 to 40 dollars for powder. Went up to PA to a small GS to get some primers and bullets didn't need powder but he had American select ,HS 6, titewad, titegroup, power pistol , unique you name it one pound 25.00, four pounds power pistol 89.00 got 500 hard cast .45 200 gr fp swc for 39.00 1000 Federal large pistol primers 30.00 Felt like a kid in a candy store I didn't get any powder ,I have plenty but things are definitely opening up

Went to a local gun show today and came home with 2 lbs. of Accurate #9. Was hoping to also pick up some #7 but none available. While cruising the isles saw Unique, Bullseye, Red Dot, HS-6, WST, SR7625, and Longshot. Prices per pound was averaging about 25 dollars with some dealers charging 22 bucks and others being a bit higher. I paid 24 bucks each for the #9, which I consider fair.

CCI primers were well represented with even some of the Ammo Dealers putting some primers up for sale and the good news here was that almost everyone was charging 30 dollars/1000. Also saw Tula primers for sale at a couple of tables for 24.00/1000 but since I'm pleased with the function of CCI's primers I'm perfectly willing to pay 30.00/1000.

Did not see a lot of bullets for sale, just a few boxes here and there, mostly Hornady products. I suspect the reason for this is that so many reloaders are now purchasing bullets online. If the Feds ever classify bullets as Hazmat I expect that will change. Because I suspect I'm not the only one reloading who worries about getting put on some Hazmat List somewhere and as a result purchases primers and powder locally.

I know I'm gonna get jumped on about this but it has to be said..

I'm not really dissing anyone here..but have to address the prices of powder. Pistol powders have been very hard to get lately. Powder prices are running in the 27-30 dollar range at most gun shows etc. Yeah some are higher..possibly gouging in some instances. But do you realize that the wholesale on a pound of HS-6 is 20 bucks.. sa a buck more for the guys that have to pay hazmat shipping. 2400 is also approx. the same price wholesale...when it can be found. For 24 bucks it was a true missed opportunity. I was in the reloading supply business and can tell you that a 20-25% profit margin just about pays the bills. Another thing. Not many realize this but a guy that works a gun show has to sell one gun per weekend just to pay expenses. This is not profit I'm talking about.. The cost of the gun. So ya have to make a 1000 dollars worth of sales to break even at a 30% profit..some shows it is more. You just can't average 30% at a show, either. Yep..gun show prices are high in some instances..but quite often those guys will deal with you just like the gun shop owner. Remember the shop owner still has the same costs or more.,.Would anyone here work for a 5% return on investment. No??!! You can't expect a dealer either at a show or a shop to do so either.. But on the other side of the coin..there has been a bit of price gouging especially on 22 rimfire ammo. Even at the big box stores..9 dollars for a 100 22 LRs?? That 2400 Would have been mine even if I didn't need it..I have friends that would. The HS-6 also. Was in Cabelas the other day and can tell ya..they are really making a profit on most of their primers. 28 dollars for IMR powders... Luckily at the last show I got some 7625 PB 4759 and 4756 for a very good price..I only bought them because They have been discontinued and I use them all occasionally. They had been there on Friday and half of Saturday so the guy worked with me.. They have to make sales too ya know

Right now I'd consider $22/lb of pistol powder to be a pretty good deal.

I think we had a misunderstanding. When I wrote "no deal" I meant as in it wasn't $17 a pound or something. I happily forked over $46.80 for the 2 pounds of HS-6 (dealer was in State and had to collect sales tax) and did you think I was going to walk away from the only pound of 2400 in the county. I'm a cheap *** and had to dicker with him over the price. If he didn't budge from that $28 price I probably still would of bought it. That's my favorite 357mag hot load powder!

I started looking around maybe a couple months ago to see what was available for getting into reloading. Everybody had primers and most had at least a few bullets, but asking about handgun powder resulted in a lot of head shaking. They hadn't seen any in a long time and didn't know when they might be likely to. It seemed I wasn't going to be able to give it a try just yet, but as I continued looking around, things suddenly started to show up here and there. I found a 9oz bottle of Trail Boss to start out with for 38 Special and 357 Magnum. It was fine for 38, but couldn't do full loads for 357. Then I found some Win 296 for that. I'd been using 158 grain bullets for both and wanted to try some 125 grain and found some Auto Comp for that. So I've been a happy camper learning how to reload. Looks like I got lucky and picked the right time to start something for a change. Oh, and they were all well under $25.

Agreed. IM lucky if I find pistol powder and when I due its $30+ a lb. Rifle is around $30 across the board. Its still cheaper for me to buy off the internet even with HAzmat. I got 8 lbs of BE-86 a few weeks ago and even with Hazmat it came out o $24 per lb. A deal in my neck of the woods

I can find Unique here in Indiana but that's about it for Alliant stuff. I did get a couple pounds of HS6 at the gunshow this weekend but paid about $25.00 per pound. Oh well I did need it!

My dealer said he got a letter from his supplier saying no Alliant products until at least February.

Ah yes..the new price of powder.. I doubt very much you will see the prices of yore...especially on 22 ammo.

I stopped at a local gun shop in northern Pa. Friday and found 8# of Red Dot for $126 and 8# of Promo for $106. They said they had just received a shipment. I bought both. I know they are shotgun powders but work great in .38. They wanted $23 for Bullseye in 1# cans.Good shop, they could have gotten much more.

I live in NJ (I know sorry to hear that) went to PA to get some bullets and primers and saw many powders especially hand gun. He had HS 6 ,power pistol, American select, red dot, and more that I forgot, he even had Vitavauri that I have never seen before. I didn't need any but considering getting some for stock . Prices vary from 20 to 26 dollars a lb. , 4lbs PP was 80.00

I bought Red Dot when nothing else was available, and it worked out well for me in 38 Spec, 9mm and 45 auto. Was able to get 8 lbs. Bullseye @ $120 + tax, so I'm good on powder for now. Also tried TiteGroup in 9mm and that has worked out very well with 115/124 gr. plated bullets!

Just got 20 lbs of Unique which I thought was pretty much in the unobtainium class!!! I am good for another week or so now...
