Default Anyone else having trouble finding pistol primers?

I'm hoping this is just a regional thing, but any kind of regular small pistol primers seem to be getting scare here in Phoenix. Cabelas used to have several shelves full of CCI regular smalls, but the last time I was there they were gone and they had Winchester regular primers. I've never used these before but I bought 2 boxes anyway just because I was getting concerned.

I stopped there this morning a few minutes before the store opened, and when they unlocked the door it looked like every guy there ran for the primers. They were cleaned out in no time at all. Plenty of rifle and shotgun primers, but even the magnum small pistols were gone.

Is anyone else seeing this? I have a few thousand in reserve but I shoot a fair bit and I'm getting worried.

Default My LGS has them

LGS had plenty when I was there. Though I haven't looked for them, I think they are pretty common around here.

Buy them in bulk online to offset the hazmat fee. You do not have to pay tax if it is not in your State

I was in Guns Unlimited in Omaha last week. Plenty of primers and pretty well stocked with pistol and rifle powders. Still no 22rf.

Default Primers

Attended a small gun show in Robertsdale, AL this afternoon and there were plenty of primers, powder, and bullets of all sizes. Did see a nice 5" 2nd model 44HE for $1100 but was out of gun money. No shortage at this end.

Thanks all. Sounds like a Phoenix/Cabelas issue.

It is a shame you are not in South Florida. I just had 40,000 Winchesters show up last month that I had forgotten were on back-order. I am just letting my shooting buddies take them off my hands for what I have in them

I just purchased 5,000 CCI SP primers this week from a LGS I buy components from ($27.99/K with no limits, and they had A LOT); also another 8 lbs. of TiteGroup powder. Powder was 15% off! ($136.99)

Since first of the year, things have really turned around from what they were 2 years ago. Pistol powders-all but Alliant, have shown up in 1, 4 and 8 lb. containers. Shops have no limits on what you can buy. If I can find 8 lbs. of Bullseye and Red Dot, I'll be good for years to come!

I've been able to buy all I need lately except for .22LR. I did see four 50 rd boxes of CCI Quiet at the local Walmart but didn't want any of that. Didn't even look at the price. Bullets and powder (as long as you're not picky about powder) can be found as well.

I use Federals and they're hard to find around here; fortunately I have a decent reserve supply.

Larger dealer here in Ohio Fin Feather Fur has been out of CCI for a while. Didn't find any at other larger store Sportmans Den on CCI.
Opted for some Winchesters for my first time, Federals were not available either.

Haven't seen any shortages of primers in N. CO. Wal Mart always has them as well the local stores. Pistol powder is a bit different. I found 8Lbs of Titegroup for $180 so Dads, you got a good deal.

Picked up S&B primers in all sizes for $20/1K a couple of weeks ago. The problem in my area is still powder. Rifle powders can be found but pistol powder looks to be made from unobtainium .

Small pistol have been scarce here as well (Idaho). I can find anything but small pistol. The only SP I have seen in the last couple of months has been Remington. I prefer CCI.

Stopped by my LGS last week to pick up some LP primers. Power of all types and makes everywhere. Complete isle shelf of primers. Wow, then got to looking at all the Winchester , CCI, Remington and Federal primers, not a single pistol primer of large or small in sight. These people had 20,000 primers out for sale, yet no pistol?? He clams to have primers this week as I watched him call his supply house. I really wonder what was happening with no pistol primers. Seemed odd to me.

No problem getting primers here if you don't mind paying $40 a 1000. I guess you would need expensive primers to touch off $40 a pound powder they sell. TG for online makes the Hazmat Fee seam ok.

An online search yesterday made it obvious that small pistol primers are backordered/outofstock in many brands in looking at the various online sellers.

I never buy primers or powder from midway.
Grafs, powder valley, natchez, midsouth, recob, widener's, maybe 3-4 others I would have to look up, all at better prices, usually, than bass pro or midway. Don't be afraid of S&B primers as a cheaper alternative.

I only use Federal primers, as all my revos are tuned. I'm sitting on over 150K of them, so I should be good for awhile. However, I always buy them in bulk when I find them.

Only when I drop them on the floor.
I bought a bunch online during a sale for less than 3¢ each including hazmat and shipping and tax (actually might have been a free shipping for over a certain $ amount). Either way it worked out to something like 2.8¢ each for enough small pistol and small rifle to last me quite awhile.

I throw primers ino any powder order I place, even if it's just 2-3k. Over the years, it starts to add up. 150k is quite a lot, way more than I have, but a 2-3yr reserve is a good rule of thumb. So if you shoot 10k a year, having 20-30k in reserve is a good plan.

No issues finding them in the great NW as far as I've seen. After buying a couple of thousand from Cabelas, I bought a box of five thousand Sellier & Bellot from a local gun forum member for $100.
So I'm set for a while...

2 weeks ago in Greenville, SC I bought 5K CCI #500 SPP for $150 out the door at a gunshow. That is equal to $23/K + $20 Hazmat + $15 shipping for a web order. It is also equal to $28.30/K + 6% sales tax at a local gun store. I thought what I paid was a fair to good price.

Bought the CCIs because I couldn't find any WSPs.

Bought the CCIs because I couldn't find any WSPs.
I would have bought them at that price too. It seems like the gun shows around here are an opportunity for the vendors to charge much more than fair market value for everything. Bricks of 22LR are 60 to 75 a brick. Primers have run about $40 per 1K. I am better off to check my local Sportsman's Warehouse weekly and pay $32.99 plus tax when I see them.

Good find.

Mike

Bought some Tula SP primers for $25/k at the Fredericksburg, VA gun show last weekend. LGS wants &40/K for Winchester primers. No issues with Tula primers for me. That puts me up to about 1.7K small pistol primers. That will get me through this year.
