For .38....

So I normally load 125 gr plated Berrys Bullets with Titegroup at 4.2-4.4gr.

I have some 125gr Remington Semi-JHP bullets I want to load.

The Hodgdon Reloading Center shows 4.3gr of Titegroup is the starting load for 125gr Hornady XTP bullets.

So I'm assuming 4.3gr would be a fine starting point for my Remington bullets?

I would start there and work up as always.

You don't state what caliber you are loading. I have noticed that COL can differ between Hornady and Berry in .40 in the same weight.

I loaded some up. COAL with berry's is 1.445.

I used a COAL of around 1.435 for Remington JHP.

If you are wanting to produce a +P defense load TightGroup is a little fast but a +P max level of 5.0 grs as listed by Hodgdon should do. A 1,000 + fps is generally what is needed to ensure reliable expansion in a JHP. I prefer a slower "medium burn rate" powder. COL in jacketed revolver ammunition is determined by the location of the canelure so crimp in the top end of the canelure and put the calipers away.

I load Remington 125gr JHP semi jacketed and Golden Saber bulk bullets on top of 6.0grs of Unique in the .38 spl. This sends them out the muzzle of a 4" S&W 67 revolver at at a chronographed 1,053 fps, should be 900+ fps from a snub. A little over the velocity listed by remington for their ammo using their 125gr JHP semi jacketed.

And also try and work my way up to 5.0 with the Titegroup. I've worked my way up to 4.6 grains with Berry's bullets so far.

One more question..
I'm not used to cannelures with most of the stuff I load. I did a light taper crimp, some right in the middle of the cannelure, some right at the top.(Where only the very top of the cannelure is exposed above the brass.)

Everything I've read says this is ok. Can you guys please confirm?

The Berrys bullets and Sierra/Hornady bullets I use for 7.5x55 don't have a cannelure so it's kind of new to me.

I'm going to have to get me a chronograph.

Not really for the XTP's which is pretty much what I use exclusively in my revolvers. The expansion has a varied velocity range depending on caliber/weight. Here's a link for the variances:

There is a marked difference in how deep the bullets will seat
in the case.
The XTP has a larger HP and is longer.
The Rem SJHP has a smaller hp and is more rounded.
This is if you seat to the same oal.
