Default 10mm Hand Loads

Been hand loading 10mm Auto ammo since 1987.

Chronographed two great loads yesterday: accurate and powerful.

WARNING: These loads are true 10mm Auto Loads (not your typical 40 S&W + 30 to 50 fps factory loads) and produce velocities similar to the original Norma loads (170 grain / 1345 fps) from the tuned Colt Delta Elite with a 5" Ed Brown barrel.

The loads:

180 grain X-Treme HP
New Midway Brass
Federal 150 Primers
Accurate 7 Powder
1.250" OAL
Velocities (fps) Hi: 1278, Low: 1261, Ave: 1266, ES 17, SD 7

165 grain Rainier HP
New Midway Brass
Federal 155 Primers
Accurate 7 Powder
1.250" OAL
Velocities (fps) Hi: 1391, Low: 1381, Ave: 1385, ES 10, SD 3

Also chronographed the same loads from a 5" barrel Kimber 10mm.

180 grain velocities (fps) Hi: 1317, Low: 1244, Ave: 1272, ES 73, SD 26

165 grain velocities (fps) Hi: 1422, Low: 1367, Ave: 1392, ES 55, SD 23

Will try a magnum primer in the 180 grain load and fire for effect.

Will also back the 165 grain load down .2 to .3 grains and try for a 1350 fps average with similar ES and SD numbers.

They be smoking...........

Was the test just for giggles or do you plan on some long rang shooting?

I like to see a maximum load in my weapons just to see what is possible
but very seldom does the top fps loading turn out to be the most accurate.

Carry on.

Interesting, but a few suggestions.

First, just post number of rounds in the sample and the average velocity. High/low.SD.ES are just clutter that serve no purpose. Not only are these not likely to be duplicated by anyone else using your load in a different gun, you are unlikely to see the same numbers in a second test!

Second, read your own post! Nowhere did you give any useful information, like the powder charge used! "Will also back the 165 grain load down .2 to .3 grains and try for a 1350 fps average....." Back down from what???? Get the point?

I've been doing this for a long time as well..

180gr bullet/AA #7/1300 fps.. Sound like some very dangerous pressures. Need more data.

The first thing I noticed about your numbers is the ES and SD are very low on the Delta Elite and all over the place with the Kimber. The Kimber gives both the highest velocity and lowest velocity by a wide margin.
Is this typical?

My own experience with all those numbers generated by the newer chronys, has 2 completely opposed findings:

1) the rational inquiring side of my mind, appreciates and marvels in such data, knowing it helps in finding theoretically improved ballistic performance;

2) the empirical side of my handgun interests, as mostly other variables account for most of what passes for accuracy or lack thereof, on the firing line.

Good groups may come & go, and whether the ES or SD is demonstrably significant at target distances less than 50' away, is questionable. Of course rifle distances and those with CDO produce a different opinion.

Thanks for your posting... I have been "looking" at 10mms since the round came out but being deeply involved in .38 Super never bought one till a few months ago...now have a Glock 40, RIA Combat Commander, PARA-USA Long Slide Hunter and a Kimber Stainless Target II... It is a great round.

So far I have only been loading the 155 Berry's plated and the 165 Speer Gold Dot HP with AA9. Just bought some Power Pistol which is supposed to be "the" powder for 10mm.

Thanks again...Bob

I also like Aa#7 in 10mm with 180gr & lighter, but w/o some accuracy notes, who cares about the numbers??????

Brian Pearce did an extensive article on loading 10mm in Handloader Magazine a couple of years ago. If you belong to LoadData.com they have all the loads. From a Kimber ST II he was getting 1400+ with 155-165s...
