Default Here we go again....is this load data safe?

Btw I know these loads aren't safe.... so if some of you were tuned in last week I posted my buddy Jasper's 45 acp load data. For those of you just tuning in Jasper is crazy. So we were at lunch shooting at the range; I have a couple boxes of some Israeli carbine ammo for the 9mm that makes nice booms and nice primer craters and was processing them through my beretta. 'ol Jasper pipes up and asks to try some out through his glock. He says "these are cute, I have a bad *** 9mm load." I stopped what I was doing so I could fully absorb this priceless jasper data, you never know how much longer he'll be around his load was 6 grains of unique Behind a 124 grain Fmj with either a standard or magnum primer because " it doesn't matter". Is this load data safe?

Unlike his 45acp load, it could be. Speer goes to 5.8gr, so 2/10gr more, longer oal, nonmag primer (at max everything matters), right bullet, right gun, could be fine. I have run 6gr under a 124gr rem gs, 1.140" oal, makes 1230fps in a g17. Speer runs a bit short on oal.

Like fredj338 said, this isn't a crazy hot load that will blow up your pistol like his 45 ACP load will. It's hot, no doubt, but on the high side of safe.

Some hand loaders remind me of some engine building friends I had years back. They used to bore 350's .120 over to get more cubes. Didn't matter to them that the engines ran hot and frequently failed. I always thought .060 over was pushing it. I load my handloads for reliability and hopefully accuracy. Then again, I don't hunt elephants with a .45.

+1, with post #5 ;

A lot of data is with a minimum OAL for maximum pressures.

The 124gr FMJ seated at 1.14 or 1.165 OAL will have much less pressure and is needed to get 6.0grs of Unique into the small case.

Sierra has their 125 FMJ at 1.090" and
Speer has its 125 TMJ at 1.135"

A OAL of 1.12" with a plated 124gr bullet did not give me any accuracy, where the light target loads at 1.165" grouped well.

My top vel/acc load with this weight bullets stops at 5.8grs of Unique. Any more and I get blown patterns and flyers.

All of this can be verified through the use of real paper load manuals. Older ones will often work but newer ones are even better.

That depends on what , exactly , is your definition of " safe " .

My definition of a "safe " load is:
5.8 grains of Unique , a 124 grain RN FMJ and a standard small pistol primer.

Just a FWIW I checked the infamous Speer #8 and found that they do indeed list 6 grains of Unique with a 125 JSP.
No COL is listed but with that much Unique I would go with at least 1.130".

Checking my old Sierra 2nd edition manual no 125 grain jacket bullets are listed. They do have a 115 JHP with 7 grains of Unique at 1.100".

I used to shoot some hot loads but not any more. Just shoot a moderate load with plated bullets.

Since the accuracy of plated bullets is not very good when pushed too fast it seems pointless to load them hot just for target practice.

I don't think I'd ever go shooting with Jasper and of course never try any of his handloads (bombs)...

I have six current loading manuals in my library. The average top load for a 9mm Luger using a 124 gr projectile is 5.47 grains of Unique with a small pistol primer. The Speer #14 and Alliant web site show the heaviest loads a maximum of 5.8 grains giving 1180 and 1170 fps.

My question is why are you staying on the range anywhere close to this guy?

Personally, why aren't you checking your own load manuals?
My manuals show loads for a 124gn FMJ bullet and Unique to range from 4.8gn to 6.2gn.
Summary of MAX loads from various manuals:
4.8/1100 fps,
5.0/1078fps,
5.0/1100,
5.6/1147fps,
5.6/1150 fps,
5.6/1170fps,
5.8/1180fps,
5.9/1192fps,
5.9/1200fps,
5.9/1209fps,
6.0/1139fps,
6.0/1167fps,
6.0/1168fps,
6.0/1170fps,
6.0/1196fps,
6.2/1170fps
A magnum primer will increase pressure a bit, but I don't know how much. The lot number of Unique could have an effect. The bullet used and the COL will have an effect.
Thus, the use of a start load...

But... If I were going to I would certainly consider a full bore loading of a .450 No. 2 Nitro Express with a 480gr. pellet @ a reputed 5,050 ft/lbf...

No acp's or Bushmasters allowed!

Cheers!
