I'm looking for some load data for my .45 Colt using a 270 gr LSWC. More specifically the bullet is the RCBS #45-270-SAA from Western Bullet Company.

I don't need any earth shakin' loads. Just some that will give me 850 fps to 1,000 fps from my 4 5/8" Blackhawk.

There are a number of standard pressure loads for that bullet in the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook.

From the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook 4th Edition
RCBS #452-270-SAA
Trail Boss 4.3-5.4 grains /576-718fps /9000-13900 PSI

Win 231 5.3-6.7grains /699-817fps /10700-13900 PSI

Unique 5.6-7.0grains/ 725-827fps /11600-13600 PSI

Accurate #5 6.8-8.6grains /660-829fps /9700-13600 PSI

Red Dot 4.4-5.5grains /667-780fps /11000-13600 PSI

Also Titegroup, N320, True Blue, if you need them message me.
Accurate #5 had the highest fps, testing was on Blackhawk 7 1/2in bbl.

I have rechecked the figures I have posted above, they are correct as they are stated in the Lyman book.

This my fav 45colt bullet. I had a cav hp to throw several diff weight lhp.

Pretty much only shoot these in my 4 5/8" rbh ss. I like 8.5gr of unique & 16.5gr of 2400. They do 900fps & 1000fps. Fwiw, wouldnt use tg if it were free.

Plenty of data at different pressure levels chronoed from real revolvers
in Handloader articles by Brian Pearce on loading for the .45 Colt.

Yes sir, but I wasn't able to find data for the 270 gr only the 280 gr.

You didn't mention a preferred powder of yours?

Handloader #246, 275 & 283 have good load data for that bullet weight.

.

Thanks for the info. I'll look back and see if I have those issues.

I have a couple of pounds of Unique on hand. I'm well stocked with W231 though.

From Handloader #246 using RCBS 45-270 mould, Ruger BKH 5-1/2" bbl & Unique:

8.0gr = 924fps @ 14K PSI max
9.0gr = 991fps
10.0gr = 1057fps @ 20K PSI max.

.

You can use data for the next higher weight bullet in most any applications (in this case the 280 bullet) but not the other way around.

Unique and W231 are both great powders for the 45 Colt

Accurate Powder Co. has excellent load data using the wide range of powders they carry . They even list 45 LC load data for the " Ruger Only " loads of 30KPSI , or less with bullet weights up to 300 grs . I have used IMR 4227 for the upper end loads for yrs . It lacks a little in velocity but is very accurate , less snappy recoil than many other powders when pushing the envelope as it is a " single based " powder. It burns cooler in my revolvers as well .

You are always fine using heavy bullet data with a lighter bullet.
As noted, the mold will throw a solid closer to 280gr, unless you are casting with linotype.

Well, I weighed a few and they are coming in around 292 grs. Who knew...
