Recently, I had a good friend who has stopped shotshell reloading give me a 3lb can of W571 which I believe is the same as HS7. I've done a bit of researching, including my five manuals and can find very little recent data on loading 9mm (my current favorite) with this powder. I can put together a few loads based on my manuals and internet searching. Since, I don't reload shotshells I would like to use this up in 9mm if it will work.

I thought that since these powders have been discontinued, there still might be some data floating around in someone's older manuals. I have access to 115,124,147 coated or lubed lead and 115,125 plated bullets.

Any recommendations on where to start? thanks

Hang on to that powder..........
HS-7 data will work in 38 special and 9mm loads, but is better
suited for the heavier bullets, due to its slow burn rate.

I even tried in in a 38 special with a 148gr BBWC bullet and was
surprised at the ten shot accuracy but it did call for a lot of powder.

It should work very well with the heavy 147gr plated bullet in
your 9mm pistol.
Mine likes Unique and HS-6 for loads from 805fps up to 975 in
my little 3.5" C9 pistol.

Being so slow you may even get to a compressed load that is safe.
Good luck with data.

So far the only powder that I have loaded with the 9mm 147gr bullet
that is to slow is with IMR 4227 powder.

A 147gr plated set at a OAL of 1.165" with 7.0C grains averages 584fps
and failed to eject in my pistol...........
however the bullets did clear the barrel...............

Speer calls for a OAL of 1.13" with its TMJ bullet.
I passed on testing SR4756 since I could only get .10 grs into the case
over the faster Unique powder.

Enjoy the w571 powder.

PS; not the 9mm but found the old 38 target load.

Everything I've been able to find pointed at a starting load of about 5.5gr under a 147 coated lead bullet. This is looking better and better. Maybe I might load up a few and check for function before upping the charge. I haven't found any data that points to problems with this level of load.

I like to compare the veracity of my manuals to online sources but both W571 and HS7 are out of production and appear to have been dropped from the newest books. Thanks for the encouragement and new resources. It looks to also have some potential in 45acp.

Well, if you want to load 9mm with powder that is on the ragged edge of too slow, you can, (don't complain about the soot), but IMHO, it is a waste of powder better suited to 12ga turkey loads. A fellow loader put together some 1 oz dove loads with 571, and they looked like he was shooting blackpowder.

I used up the last of a couple of pounds of 571 reloading it in 357 Mag a few years ago. I used to use it making duck and goose loads for 10 gauge before they outlawed lead shot and quit hunting ducks about a year or two after lead was outlawed (because leases got way too expensive). It's burn rate is real close to Blue Dot according to older burn rate charts and it looked like that in real life too. It made me some pretty decent 357 Mag ammo.

With that said, you might be able to use it with hot loads only for 9MM. I didn't try it out on 9MM, but I have loaded Blue Dot with some 147 grain bullets and it performed well on the higher end. So I think are on the right track with your coated 147 grain bullets and the powder charge doesn't sound too high to start off with.

For some odd reason I got a bunch of discontinued Hodgdon powders in an auction. Hs-5 6 and 7. About 5 pounds of each. I used the HS 6 in the 28 ga. The HS-7 would work in it too..but no more 28 ga cases. While it may work in the 9mm...I think it is too slow to make efficient loads in the 9. I would have to go check my records but do remember using it in 357 41 and 44 mags. Much better suited to them. HS-6 is ok in the 9.

W571 is slower than you think. It's almost as slow as AA#9 so I would not recommend using it in the 45 ACP.

W571 Is a great powder for the 10mm and in turn the 40 S&W. I'm not sure I would use it in the 9mm although it will work. If you don't load for the 10mm or 40 S&W you will be very happy with it for the .357 Magnum.

Back when hunters started loading steel shot, when lead pellets were outlawed,
for the heavier loads, 800-X, Blue Dot and W571 powders were called fore.
This will give you and idea of their burn rate.
These are "Magnum" type powders for the .357 loader that wants upper end loads.

I am almost betting that a full compressed load of w571 in the 9mm
with the 147gr plated RN (Ball) type bullet set at 1.13" will fall
just short of a factory load in the fps department and still be safe.
However it would be interesting if this powder could get a 147gr
bullet to around 805-840fps and see how accurate it would be.
