Default CCI 300 primers in the 41 magnum

This afternoon I wanted to load up 50 rounds for a range session tomorrow. My data calls for 15 grains of Alliant 2400 Hornady 210 grain xtp and CCI 350 primers. All I have are CCI 300 primers. Do you think using these would be ok?

Yepper, in fact I recall there was a warning against using magnum primers with 2400 awhile back. Anyway use CCI 300 with all my 2400 loads,.41.and .44

I never use magnum primers with 2400. No data that I recall on the Alliant website calls for magnum primers with 2400. I would say you are OK.

A magnum primer is only needed for hard to ignite ball powders like W296/H110, HS-6 and the like. Just because the cartridge has magnum in the name doesn't force you to use a magnum primer.

In reality when using 2400 I have always gotten better results with a standard primer. Remember, there were no magnum primers when 2400 was developed lol.

I'm not a ballistics expert....nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. That being said, I have always adhered to published reloading data. I'm not qualified to say what will and will not happen when you diverge from published data.

Years back when I reloaded .357 Magnum cartridges with 2400, I observed that, even with magnum primers, 2400 did not burn completely when shot from a 4 inch barrel. Occasionally some un-burned granules worked their way beneath the extractor star and impeded cylinder rotation and actuation.

This is just a "SWAG", but without the magnum primers you may experience the same problem. Others may know more though.

Ole Elmer was the Father of the 44 Magnum and was a big 41 Man too.

He loved 2400 like a pot head adored ''Mary Jane''

He NEVER used magnum primers to light his 2400.

Alliant/Speer started recommending several years ago to NOT use magnum primers with their 2400 data as high pressure will result and that performance significanty improved with standard primers.
