Loaded some VV N340 240gr. JSP. I will provide a range report with velocities as soon as I get some time at the range.

In the meantime, was wondering people's thoughts about N340 in this application. This is my first time loading it.

Haven't tried it, but I'll be curious to hear you results. What's the goal/application?
In terms of maximum velocities, VhitaVuori's data rates it number 5 out of their 6 suggested powders.

N310 is a first place accuracy contender in one of my 44 Spl's with a Zero 240JSP.

In the 45ACP, the N310 beat every other powder I tried (including Bullseye, WST, 231) with a 185JHP. I settled on a load similar to the one the USMC team uses. I've been testing with a Ransom Rest for the last month. I'm seeing 10-shot, 2" groups @ 50 yards from my bone-stock, off the shelf Kimber 1911.

Next up, I have some N320 I plan to wring out in a Colt Gold Cup 9mm.

I've used N340 with the 200gr Gold Dots, 240gr XTP, and 250gr Keith bullets. Most of them were loads between .44 Special and .44 Magnum, but they were clean burning, pleasant to shoot, and accurate.
 
I don't have very many goals with this powder, I am mostly interested in the learning experience. I picked up the powder a while back mainly to experience different manufacturer's products. So far I have been pleased with how well it meters. The bulk also seems to fill the case on the 44 mag nicely.


That being said, this particular application is a load for a 629 classic my father carries in his RV. He wanted the JSP bullet while hiking. I recommended my favorite 300gr xtp over 2400 for protection use, but you can't tell him anything.

Don't like it (for .44 Mag only). My only .44 Magnum is a 92 Rossi rifle. I couldn't get any accuracy using N 340. When I got hold of some N 110 the tuned changed to cloverleaf groups at 50 meters.

Like it in .45 ACP; .45 Colt; .44WCF; .38S PL and 9mm Luger.

I've been loading various Vihta Vouri powders for about 25 yrs. when they first showed up in the US. They are great powders; meter well, burn clean and don't lose power in cold temperatures.

I use everything from N310 to N110. N340 is usable in 44 mag but pretty fast for magnum so be careful. Viht N110 is much better for magnum pistol cartridges.

8.5gr of N340 behind a cast 240gr bullet gave me a very consistent velocity of 900fps and very good accuracy out of my 3" barreled model 29. I highly recommend. I just chronoed these a couple weeks ago.
 
Data from range

I made it to the range today to test out the N340 loads. Excellent shooters, with a fairly stout recoil. Very accurate in my 629 Classic 5.5", ported. Clean and very consistent velocities.

Attached is the compiled report data from 5 strings of 10 shots. The loads were 10.3; 10.5; 10.7; 11.0; 11.2

With standard deviations in the 13 fps range, I am very excited for the potential for this powder.

Average Velocity of 1108; 1121; 1133; 1148; 1167, which is nice and linear.

Powder charges fill the case nicely around the 11 gr. mark. Brass was just starting to stick at the max charge tested, but not to the point that it would prevent use of that charge.

All in all, it looks to me that N340 is a happy camper in the .44 Mag. Your mileage may vary.

this is a kinda fast powder. Can do alot better. You also didnt mention your barrel length.
If I was loading for a 2.5" anti people load,, would be pretty good.
Basically keep the recoil down and atay in lower velocity. Although for that Id rather carry a 45 acp and have an easier to shoot package with less recoil and more rounds.
Honestly If I am gonna handicap myself with the short comings of a revolver, I want the advantages of a revolver. Big chunks of lead at high velocity.
You aint doing that with 340... move up to a slower powder
 
Any way dont get me wrong, love a 44 with a 240 bullet.. Depends on barrel though,, but I a going CFE to H110 depending on barrel length

My normal "go to" for 44 mag is a 300 gr xtp pushed by 2400. This load is a result of wanting to try out different combinations. I don't think 1150 fps for a 240gr bullet is all that shabby.
