I loaded a box of the Lehigh Defense Xtreme Defense bullets today, and I was not very impressed. I was loading the 120gr 45 caliber version of the machines copper bullet.

I have been reloading for about 45 years, and feel that I do a rather decent job over the years. This is a bullet that I would not want to load on a regular basis!

This bullet seems to want a rolled crimp instead of a tapered crimp. The case doesn't want to cut into the bullet, and the machines groove didn't coincide with the mouth of the case. It was difficult to maintain a consistent COAL.

In my opinion, loading this bullet is more demanding than loading my precision ammo for 1000 yard F class matches.

Well, you gave it a try....

I've bought 1000 bullets of a type that was really hard to mess up but I was glad when I finally used all of them and didn't order any more.

I'm not big on copper bullets, especially high tech whopper stoppers, but I surely won't try the ones you did.

Did you mean machined instead of machines? That would make better sense.

What seating punch were you using, RN or SWC? Either would engage just the points of the area between the flutes resulting in inconsistent seating depth. If you still have any try a flat face seating stem that will engage the face of the bullet, this will give very consistent seating depth. This should solve the positioning of the cannelure problem and allow crimping. Naturally this assumes the nose-to-cannelure length is consistent! A roll crimp is definitely correct for any monolithic bullet.

120 gr? Man, all them pretty shapes must be pretty whizz-bang if they're gonna make up for a 30-50% loss in sectional density.

Seriously, this ultra-light bullet fad needs to die.
