Default 250 Grain Lead load .44 Special

Anyone using the Lyman Recommended accurate load of 6.9 grains of Unique Powder. And does it seem like a good load. I've never loaded lead for the .44 special. And bought 500 Missouri 250 gr Keith Style coated pills

I've used 7 grs. with the Lyman #429421, about 245-250 grains cast of wheelweight alloy; muzzle velocity about 860 fps from a S&W 24-3 with 6 1/2" barrel. Good, accurate load that's slightly more comfortable to shoot than the popular 7.5 / Unique load. However, my personal preference with such a bullet is Bullseye powder.

Try the 6.9 Unique load listed in the Lyman book (as long as you're using a strong gun in good shape). I'll bet it will also shoot well. For continuous shooting, this load will likely produce about all the recoil you want to deal with.

I don't know anything about coated bullets, but would suspect they still need to be the right diameter for your gun if you expect any degree of accuracy. This may be anywhere from .429" to .432".

I have used both 6 gr Unique and 7 gr Universal (which is very close to Unique's performance) to good effect.
Only way to know is to try it out
When trying a new combination, I usually load a box of 50 in a "ladder"
with 10 rounds each of like 6, 6.25, 6.5, 6.75, 7 grains powder, everything else the same.
Your gun will tell you which one is "magic" if you shoot off sandbags for groups.
Then you can chrono the good load and stick with it.

The snubbie target was offhand.
The target labeled #12 might have been, don't remember.
The 200GD target shows what you are looking for off sandbags.

I was just at range today shooting my loads of 250 grain on top of about 7.5 gr. Unique. Very nice out my 29-3 with 8 3/8 barrel. Also shoot out of my Dan Wesson 44 and they just rip the center right out of targets!

Yep. In the magnum I like 8 gr Unique.
Nice all around load. I consider 10 gr. max.
In the Special I don't like going over 7 with a 240-250.
