I found some 9mm bullets but they are 145 gr and I only have Ram Zip for powder. My manuals and what I have found online give load data for Ram Zip with 147 grain bullets, but no data for 145 grain. I have found data for 145gr but not for use with Ram Zip powder.

I am loading for training only, and do not need precision accuracy or any particular velocity so I think I should be safe going with a mid level load for 147 gr bullets. I would appreciate any advice on this. I am only concerned with safety at this point, not performance.

Rule of thumb, as long as the bullets are of the same basic construction and style - i.e. both FMJ or both cast lead RN or both plated RN, etc. - a given powder charge is virtually always safe to use with the next lighter weight bullet. You can use the powder charge for a 147gr bullet for anything down to a 124gr. You can use the powder charge listed for a 124gr bullet for anything down to a 115gr. You can use the powder charge listed for a 115gr bullet for anything down to a 100gr, etc,
So your charge for a 147gr is perfectly safe with a 145gr - as long as the bullets are otherwise basically the same - both FMj, both cast RN, both plated RN etc.
 
Rule #1 with a 145-147 gr. bullet in a 9mm pistol is to get the OAL correct
for the amount of powder that you are using.

This long bullet can take up a lot of space in the little 9mm case and build up pressures in a hurry if you try to "Hot Rod" loads.

In my 3.5" C9 pistol a FMJ 147 with fast to slow powders will do
807 to 975 fps, with the Speer TMJ.

In my 5" barrel a 1.165" OAL load of red Dot will do 848 fps
and a OAL of 1.13" with BE-86 will do 1220 fps, with the Berry plated RN. (edit: 1220 should read 1040fps ) sorry.

850-890 seems to be a sweet spot for a nice target load.

There is only one load in Hodgdons (for "any powder") using a 147gr bullet with a MAX velocity above 1K (and THAT'S just barely: @ 1004!)... Ed, that 1200+ seems (at least to me) to be really high?

You are correct...........

that 147 fps of 1220 was for a 124gr,
the 147 gr bullet with BE-86 does 1040 fps.

I was looking at the wrong line of my data notes.
Thank you for the heads up.

PS;
but we all know that data might be watered down from the ammo of Yor
and older ammo was a little stouter than today's .

I betya that I could probably get another 180fps out of that bullet if I tried but I'm not into shooting "Major loads" in my pistols.

in the right pistol, it will do......................

Long story short...........

That 1372fps Major loads fps is for a 124 gr bullet.

The 147 gr bullet in a Major load does 1175 fps with a PF of 172 Max.
1130 fps with a PF of 163 is the starting Major load.

Buffalo Bore does load a 147 gr. bullet to 1175 fps if you have a weapon that will shoot this +P+ ammo, safely.
