Default Primers at Billings Gunshow

One vendor had primers for sale....only $20.00/100 ...yeah, he sold out in minutes.
Insanity.....I was looking for some overpriced guns and ammo, couldn't find any...plenty of insane prices how ever.

Got to visit with a lot of friends however.

A dealer in town took primers in on trade for a rifle and was asking $30/100. When he quoted the price I said no thanks and walked out.

I'll never need primers at that price.

At those kinds of prices, I would consider selling a few thousand from my stash... I couldn’t bear to shoot ammo that was costing me $.30/round for the primer!

I think I’m going to start saving my spent primers from now on.

Now where was that thread on remanufacturing used primers?

Exclamation Primers at that price!!

That is insane. If I had been able to get up there I was going to take 5M SPPs to a friends table to sell. Glad I didn't. In fact as I was typing he called me to see if I was coming up. He actually told me BRING PRIMERS and POWDER!!. And I have a couple complete AR lowers and he said to bring them. They're selling for 350-400 bucks. Oh, well. Still snowing here. It was 30 below this AM...now up to 8 below. And I live on a ranch at the end of the road. County might plow us out on Thursday next. Yeah right! He also said prices on most everything are ridiculous. A fellow told him he had "only" paid 150 per M for large rifle primers and bought 3000. Well insanity is everywhere ...even in Big Sky Country

I went to a show a couple weeks back here in Tennessee. About the same thing. Primers $30 for 100. Powder $100 per pound. Believe it or not it was one of my best gun show visits because I walked out with 900 pieces of 30 carbine brass. 500 of them had live primers. $80. Couldn’t beat that even pre Covid. I guess it really just depends what your looking for. When everyone is panicking and buying up all the popular stuff they overlook the stuff I’m looking for.

$20-$30 per hundred does tempt me to sell some primers.
But the fear that I might never be able to replace them for less - or ever even replace them at any price - discourages me from actually doing it.

I feel the same way as you do. I don't trust the world to be as we knew it in the short term future. I Do have quite a bit of pistol powders and primers. Looking for 5000 SRPs I stuck away somewhere. They are the ones I am shortest on. But I just can't believe these prices. The people at the local shows are pretty much every day shooters/reloaders...not too much flippers. At least they didn't used to be!

The average price for a pound of powder was around $75.00........and yet people were in a buying frenzy.

I did get a good deal on some L frame speedloaders...6 of them for $20.00 and a pouch for $10.00

Someone close to me was offering primers at around $200 per thousand. I said I have enough at that price. Then a friend who knew I had a lot of 9mm reloads offered me something like $40 for 50 rounds. If you figure primers at $200 for a thousand a box of 50 is still pretty cheap (compared to what people are willing to pay for ammo).

I paid forty bucks for a pound of W231 at the West Palm gun show last week. There is a gentleman there that sells lots of powder all the time at reasonable prices..

I sold a few primers over this weekend(so far) sold one fellow 1000 SPPs for the offered price of a hundred dollars And only 1000. He called me back later and offered 150 for another 1000. I said no. I know it sounds crazy but I figure it won't be worthwhile to flip a 1000 I can sell 'em for more myself on GB

I'll say it again.... "I'll quit shooting before paying those prices." You buy at that price and you just help escalate the profits of the profiteers.

IMHO,

A friend said that the Black Sheep in Coeur d'Alene was selling primers for "only" $70.00/thousand on his recent visit.

Well, our club secretary got about 20,000 plus primers... SP, SR, and LP that a local dealer called him to sell for him. He was able to sell them for $42/1000 which is about as high as I’m willing to go, but compared to what some people are getting seems downright reasonable. He also had some rifle and pistol powders “reasonably” priced. He’s just selling to club members but as you can imagine the supply is going fast!

Two years ago we were buying from the local gun shop reloading presses, powder, bullets and primers that they had bought from estate sale/collections. Most of it for cents on the dollar. Primers were $10.00 a brick. Guess I ought to sell some..........not!

Like other members, Ive shelved most of my centerfires at the current prices. I shoot my air rifle and will be spending most of this summer fishing. Only bringing out live ammo for real matches.

Shame that we'll be missing out on a year of recreational shooting because of all this :/

The gun I just purchased essentially cost me 2000 primers and 2 lbs of powder. I sold the fellow 500 Hornady 224 55 gr FMJs but got paid cash for them. A new in Box Savage M-10 in 223 with a 3-9 Nikon scope. I may actually keep this one as it is a nice rifle in a fair caliber. Now,I will probably sell one of the Rem 722s in 222 Rem. This stuff going on is purely insane

I have a Savage M11 with a Nikon 3-9X scope. With the right ammo on a good day it shoots a one hole group at 100 yards.

While still hard to find in SW Washington, I am paying $2.40 to $5.50 per 100, except a local pawn shop that is selling theirs at $30 per 100 - they only have 6 - 100 ct boxes of Winchester LPP.

I sold about 80k primers from my stash, bought in 2008 for the upper end of the price you mentioned.

You sold 80 THOUSAND primers at $30 per HUNDRED that you bought in 2008 - probably for less than $30 per thousand.
So at $300 per thousand, you got $24,000 for primers you bought in 2008 - probably for less than $2,400?
Nice ROI.
FWIW, the way you wrote it sounded like you BOUGHT them for that price in 2008. I had to read it a couple of times to figure out what you really meant.
If I had 80k of primers to spare I'd sell them too. But since I only have a little over half that many all total in my "stash", I don't think I'll be selling any.

Anyone can charge as much as they want for whatever they are selling. The prices in upstate NY are also nuts. I have not bought any ammo or loading supplies in over a year and now mostly use my handguns with Crimson trace sights in dry fire mode and seeing where the red dot goes with a short rapid push/release of the button. It is good practice and costs only a couple of 2032 batteries for the whole year. Also very quiet and saves me a lot of gas.
Of course the current ammo and supplies prices pale in comparison to what our friends in Texas are being charged for electricity. Count your blessings.

Yep, i bought a much needed brand new Kubota Tractor package with the profits of the sales. While I have plenty for my shooting that was the bigger part of my stash. Yep i bought them in 2008 for about $24/1000.

Not selling any primers [might have to trade a few later] but have picked up some powder in the last 4 months, 4#LilGun and 2#Tin Star from midway and 8#Red Dot from a gun shop. Wasn’t at pre covid/election prices but not bad and should last me as long as my primers will.

A friend (shooter & reloader) told me he spent $2,600 for 1 case (5K) of large pistol and small pistol primers on Gun Broker. Primers, shipping, Haz Mat fee, plus sales tax.

26¢ per primer is a bit steep.

When I was trapshooting and reloading 20K rounds a year that was the price for 8 pounds of Green Dot powder. Shot was 8.00/bag. Now 45.00

A friend has 16,000 SPP. @ $20/100 he is sitting on $3,200 in primers and @ $30/100 it's $4,800. They cost him an average of $27/1000 which is a cost of $432.

Man....I thought we got ripped off here in Australia. The last lot of Federal Small Pistol Primers cost me $76 AUD per 1000. That's about $58 USD. I just checked online and they have gone up to $90-95 AUD per 1000 which is about $ 69-73 USD.
