A buddy of mine asked me a question for which I did NOT have an answer. He was playing a trivia game at a local watering hole and it was a multiple choice question.

Which of the following nuts are an ingredient in gun powder? and then goes on to list 5 different nuts. The supposed answer is peanuts; which are actually legumes and not nuts.

My Research shows that peanuts are are actually used in the manufacture of dynamite; not gun powder. Modern ammo is nitrocellulose. Any one ever heard of peanuts used in modern powder?

Nitroglycerin is used in double base powder. It appears peanuts can be used as a source of glycerol in the manufacture of nitroglycerin. However, that would not cause me to say there’s peanuts in gunpowder....or marshmallows. However, I am now interested in some smores. Where’d I put the chocolate?

you should try a smear of peanut butter on the graham cracker when making smores.

At NOS Indian Head MD we used fine ground Peanut power as a Forming agent with Plasticizers added to make C4/6. Used in 2.75 Motors years ago.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just drop a peanut in the case, unsalted of course, seat the bullet and be on your way. This may cause the need for peanut background checks in some states.

I've never heard of peanuts being used in gunpowder, but I have read about the role Bacon played in the development of black powder.
