Default Lyman 429360, does it work for you

Just realized that although i have been using it long enough with various powders, i do have an IDEA on how it groups in my gun at my testing distances.

As i need to start purchasing molds I looked into the bullet that ive been using as an option, and have been seeing decades worth of horror stories on it for accuracy.

Some stories, such as "Beagle" of beagled bullet mold fame, had a personal horror story of erratic accuracy from any model of this mold he ran across since 1962.

Im just wondering on what your current generation N frames are doing with it

I tried using in in handgun silhouette years ago and it was a no go. It did ok out to 50 yds but past that, it didn't shoot worth a damn.

Looking at it, I can see it tries to present the largest possible metplat it can without being a wad cutter.
Try a batch at 900 FPS or less to see if it does any better.

Default Stick with Lyman Keith Molds (429421, etc.)

The Lyman Ideal 429360 has long been recognized as being a problematic design. A recent search on the mold revealed the term “infamous”. That sums it up.
There’s a dedicated article on it at the “castpics” website. The author tried many techniques, including opening up the front driving band. He eventually gave up. Good advice.
Be aware that there are a number of iterations, using rounded or squared lube groove and different width bearing bands.
Usually there’s a few for sale on eBay at any given time. That says something.

Read up on Elmer Keith’s original specs for his 429421 mold. He is very specific on dimensions, and he got upset with Lyman every time they redesigned it.
Anyhow, if you want a good cast SWC it’s hard to beat 429421. I’m not a fanatical Keith absolutist, but he hit a home run with that one!
It’s just a great design and a better use of your efforts than the 429360.

I’ve attached the Lyman blueprints for both the .44 and .38/357 Keith molds, 429421 and 358429 respectively.

I've got an old single cavity Ideal The old one with the mold made on the handles...pre 28"..It does shoot well for me in 2 guns I tried it in. But it doesn't like to be pushed and it shoots better with a bit softer lead. I shoot it in a Ruger BH in 44 special and in a 4 inch 29-2...under a 1000FPS. The BH likes it best

I never had any success with that bullet. Tried soft/hard alloys, different lubes, sized to .429/.430/.431, nada.

Shot it in ca bulldogs, 624, 29's (2x) 629, contender bbl's (2x) & a marlin lever action.

Gave up and sold the mold & stuck with the 429421 for all my swc needs in the 44cal's.
