I am looking at a local ad that states:
Antique S&W 5-shot .32 caliber revolver. On top of the barrel it says Smith and Wesson, Springfield, Mass, U.S.A. Pat'd May 11, 1880, Jan 5, 1882, April 9, 1889.
Any help will be appreciated.
Agree with pace40's ID, it has a 6" barrel which is less common than the standard 3 and 3.5". It looks fairly worn, but if mechanically sound I would guess about $200.
Concur with Mike and Alan. If the bore and chambers are in good condition and the action tight, I might go $250 on this one as an old shooter. The longer barrel is kind of nice. Not a collector's piece, obviously, but as a piece of old machinery to learn about and experiment with, it's good enough. I bought a cheap .38 Safety Hammerless a few days ago for exactly that reason -- learn about an earlier design from a gun that was mechanically sound but not the best looking on the outside.
This model was in production from 1883-1909, so you can approximate a date based on your serial number. Then you can flip a coin to decide whether the rough date should be trusted or not.
These are very common, particularly in this condition. The only thing that makes it unusual is the barrel length. I would not pay more than $200 for it myself. The photo is of a similar gun which I think I paid too much for - $250. I've been kicking myself ever since, but it is a nice reblue and has the six inch barrel.
