Help with Safety Hammerless .32
Hi,
I just joined this forum, and hope to have some help about a few guns that I just add to my collection.
Here is the first: a Smith & Wesson Safety Hammerless, caliber .32, in nice condition. Serial number is 238507.
My questions are: (1) how many were made of this variation and what is the production time frame and (2) what is the production date (or shipping date) of this revolver.
Thanks in advance.
Douglas.

You have an outstanding example of a .32 Safety Hammerless third model. The 2" version is considered Rare. It was produced from 1909 - 1937, with the S/N range from 170000 to 242981, so yours would be in the later part of the issue, probably in the 1930's. I wouldn't be surprised to see it bring $600 - $800 in a well attended auction. Now if you had the box........

Richard,
Thanks for your reply. Very good news indeed.
I don't have the box, but the gun is in very nice condition. It was love at first sight, believe me.

I have more Safety Hammerless models than sense, but this one is a beauty. I'm jealous!

Thanks again for the compliments.
Is it possible to have a date of shipping for this gun?

My #206430 shipped in March of 1915, so I would guess yours shipped around 1918-20, but numbers and dates are not always consecutive in this era. If you are a member of SWCA Roy Jinks can tell you the exact date under "Shipping Date Request".

I just thought to look up my 32 Safety Hammerless, has S/N 2249XX, and was shipped Mar. 1921. That's about 13,500 below your S/N, so my est of 1930's may still be correct.

Serial # 238915 shipped 1/1930 so yours should be close to that. As stated above they made no attempt to ship in numberical order and that model was selling very very slowly by that time. It probably was within a year or two one way or the other though. By the way the correct box for that would have been one of the maroon flip top boxes rather than the mustard yellow boxes used earlier.
