maybe just a paperweight
Hi,
I bought this one for impulse. My idea was to build a nice wooden box (or a frame to hang it in the wall) and pair it with some old 19th Century dollar bills, pictures or even a Sheriff badge. I did neither up to now.
The gun was ... well... "restored" (to use the previous owner's words) but all the original marks and inscriptions were deleted. Trigger spring is broken (I'm thinking to buy a repro at Cimarron.com) and the ejector is not working properly. Caliber seems to be .44 Russian and serial number is 30416.
I paid for it US$ 200.00. I don't know if should I stick to the original plan of sell it. Is it rare? Does it still retain some collectable interest?
Thanks,
Douglas.

This is a New model 3 in .44 russian. It is for sure overworked. But, from what I can see are the barrel and cilinder prety OK.
If the lockup and timing is alright after you replaced the triggerspring. It could be a shooter. It could be restored becouse it was in a terrible shape outside. Let it checked out by a good gunsmith. The barrellenght could be original. Nice find for that price.

I think it's outstanding for $200. I would have bought it too.
Repair it and shoot it guilt free!

I've been wanting to do the same thing for quite a while now. This would be a great one for a shadow box on the wall. You could still take it out to shoot at times too.

Hello Douglas Jr,
Brazil is a long way from its original point of manufacture to find that old war horse. I believe it is a 44 Double Action and not a New Model #3, and from the end view of the cylinder it does appear to be in 44 Russian caliber. A serious collector would not purchase it to put in his collection for display as the barrel has been shortened and the finish re done. But anyone would buy it for $200! That is a steal. It is not rare but that is a great price and is perfect for a wall display or to fix up as a shooter. Great find. Do you see many antique S&Ws in Brazil?
Mark

I'd a bought it too
It's handsome and even though it's been worked over, it's still a nice and important hangun. Enjoy what you have. Find a vintage holster and take it to the range someday to feel the history.

I would fix it up, shoot it a little and then put it in a wall display. Its a fine conversation piece and $200 is a great price.

Cflier. Have you seen the position of the trigger. If this is a double action I am to.
This is a New Model 3.

Many thanks for your comments. At lest it was a nice deal. Probably it will end up hanging on the wall, as its ammo is hard to get here.
Mark, S&W revolvers were widely popular down here during the first half of the 20th century. Because of gun restrictions concerning importation after the 1950s, its presence also decline. In addition, gun ownership has becoming more and more restrictive, and the sighting of old S&W (a common thing until the 80s) is somewhat rare today.
Most of the S&W's I've seen are DAs, and early M&P Hand Ejectors.
Greetings,
Douglas

Thanks for your comments and opinions.
Now, what would be a good source for a triger spring for this gun?
