Default Date and cost for S&W safety hamerless 4th model

Curious as to the born on date for this S&W. I think it is a 4th model safety hamerless in 38 (serial # is 15261). Also curious as to what folks think it is worth. The timing/lock up and action is flawless. I think it sat around for a while and has not been fired much.

Second question. Does the archive letters from Smith show grip types?

Thanks

Yes it is a 38 Safety Hammerless 4th model. By the way, you left a number out of the serial number in your post. It was probably shipped in early 1902, but that could be off by as much as a couple of years because of the way S&W shipped their guns. The only way to get an accurate date is to send for a History Letter from Roy Jinks. Yes, grip typle is generally given in the letter. Yours are almost certainly not factory original grips. At the time your gun was made they came standard with hard rubber grips and pearl and ivory grips could be special ordered. The special order grips from that time frame had gold medallions inserted.

Thanks for the info Mark. I think I will write and get a letter. I have done this with many colts but not with S&W yet. Interested in seeing how they do theirs.
