S&W Model 1 1/2 SA Grips
Continued from my post about brushed finish on my S&W model 1 1/2 SA. H Richard.. has a block letter logo on his..
From my research so far, i have found that this model serial
numbers 1 to 15,000 have plain grips / no logo.
numbers 15,000 to 29,000 have block letter S&W logo &
numbers 29,000 to 97,574 have the inter twined S&W logo.
I just thought i would pass this info along. I like these mod
1 1/2 SA 32 cal. Anyone wishing to collect them, should be interested in all three grip variations.
Serial # 1 to 15,000 were made in 1878 / 1879 / 1880
Serial # 15,000 to 29,000 -- not sure of dates
Serial # 29,000 to 97,574 were made 1880 to 1892
As i said, this is from my limited research. And should not be taken as fact. Although, i feel it is accurate info.
I'm still hoping to have further discussion concerning the brushed finish. My gun is not the only one. I have seen others with a very similar finish to mine.
It may very well be, steel wool buffing.
Thanks in advance, for any members discussion .. Rich

To fill in your dates, I checked the SWCA database and found that all listed guns within serial numbers 1 to 15000 were shipped in 1878 and 1879. 15,000 to 29,000 were shipped in 1879 and 1880. The last serial number listed in the database is 98864.
These revolvers did not go out the door in order. The latest ship date was 1892 with serial number 90132, while the highest serial number with a date was 95514 which shipped in 1886.
It was very common to "clean" your nickel plate with steel wool, so you will see many old guns with lots of fine swirl marks. You will find warnings not to do this in every gunsmithing and gun restoration book out there, but apparently not many basement gunsmiths read them.

Thanks for all the great info. I have a half dozen and it includes varieties off all 3 grip types. My earliest is a low 4 digit without the external strain screw.

Thanks from me, too. I've only got the one, S/N 516xx,
and it's a sweet little shooter. I guess I figured they were
all the same, 'til now. TACC1

Update -- I've been searching for a "hand spring" for a few months now. This is the part that engages the cylinder advance.
A few of your members have also been looking for me. Well, i just got news from a member in Idaho, that Jack First is making
up a bunch of these for the model 1 1/2. Should be avail. in two or three months. I have mine on order.
This part is almost impossible to find, i even considered buying a parts gun and we did bid on one. But stopped bidding once it went over $140.
I wanted to pass on this good news to the forum members.

Hand Spring for Model 1 1/2
I finally got the "hand spring" from Jack First (took 8 months) the gun smith fit it in and it works great. In a previous post, i said if someone on the forum is looking for this part - Jack is making a bunch up.. So if you need some, get them NOW!
Now that the gun is working 100% ..I Listed on Gun Broker and it sold in a week.. She was all polished up and looking fine except for some scratches on the cylinder. Sold for $600
Gun Broker listing # 334923544. I had some help from another member on this forum, Thanks Greg.
Anyway, if you have been looking for a hand spring. Jack has them.

Just to muddy the waters a bit: I have #24064 which (per Roy) shipped 11/1879.

Dosgatos, no muddy waters here.. Your serial # 24,064 has "block inter twined" grips & was shipped per Roy in 1879.
As Glowe updated my post, my model 1 1/2 serial #10,XXX was built & shipped in 1878 or 1879. And has "no logo" grips.
Many guns from S&W did not go out the door in order.
Thanks, Rich
