Buy a gun because of the grips?(antique edition)
There's a similar thread running over in the "New Gun" forum (1896- 1961), so I thought we should have one here for the oldies. 
I just picked up this 32 DA 2nd for $100.00. I think the grips may be worth more than that. 
The gun itself has an interesting wear pattern. Mechanically, I would consider it fired very little, if at all. The rifling is strong and the cylinder shows no sign of firing, both in the interior and on the front face. (These are usually blackened and the plating is gone. this one is very clean.)
Just how the barrel could lose all of it's finish and the frame very little is a mystery to me. All of the numbers (Serial #3113) match, so it's not pieces from different guns.
As seen in the pictures there are two disastrously buggered screws. (Side Plate and Mainspring Tension) They currently are frozen and I am soaking in Kroil and Ballistol. Hopefully I will be able to get them loose and find a couple of replacements.

I have a couple of antique blue models in similar wear pattern, the frame very good and the barrel & cylinder very faded to a patina. I feel it is a difference on the type of metal/heat treat of the barrel/cylinder that makes it wear/deteriorate at different rates, or thet the finish just didn't hold up as well on the different metal.

It's hard to say what caused the difference in finish loss. I'm guessing that it spent years in a leather holster and the Tannins in the leather ate the nickel. The grips/stocks are very nice and probably worth more than you paid for the revolver.

What stumps me is that the cylinder has only lost a few flakes.
I would think that the cylinder would be one of the first places to be effected by any kind of holster contact......

Agree. The cylinder condition is a bit of a puzzle. I know they were made from a different steel and often their finish went first (I think from a (case(?)) hardening process). How about I suggest a very sweaty hand?
