Pictures, caliber, barrel length are essential. There was also a Smith revolver of that era that was completely independent of Smith & Wesson.

Red9 is right! What you have is an Otis Smith. (That is the exact marking on the top strap of one I have.) Mine is a little .22 spur trigger, bird's head butt and the cylinder is removed by pulling forward on the pin under the barrel. Not a S&W.

ndiane42, Welcome to the Forum. Google the US Patent Office archives and look up the Smith patent. Otis Smith's revolvers were period competitors and were well made small spur trigger guns, generally, but sold for less than S&Ws. Are you sure about the date and patent number? patent numbers in 1873 were many thousands of numbers higher than 5400 1863 was already up to 54,000 range. Ed.
