22 long rifle ctg
Hi, new here. Have a S/W 22 long rifle ctg single shot pistol. Barrel measures 10" It swivels over the grip to load. Has a serial number I think? on the bottom of the grip of 774. Anyone know the history of this gun? Mother in law just brought it over out of the blue and didn't even know if it was loaded! Looks to be in good shape. The swivel looked unusual to me but I'm not experienced with older guns. Thanks...Ed Sorry Pictures won't upload!!??

Welcome to the Forum Ed! When you post, scroll down until you see Manage Attachments, then click. Next click Browse and that takes you to your computer hard drive. Look for the pictures you want to post and double click. Now click Upload and wait until the file shows up in the Manage Attachments window. You can then repeat the steps by clicking Browse again, etc. You can load up to 5 pictures for each post.
Give it a try and you should be able to post. Please add pictures of the serial number and both sides of the gun. Also, look under the barrel catch to see if there are serial numbers stamped on the latch and the barrel frame under the latch.

From his description and the serial number, I believe the gentleman has a Straightline, last of the .22 single shots. Very valuable, not many were made. These guns came in blued, pressed-steel cases with rounded edges. Have mother-in-law look for it in case it is sitting in a drawer or closet as having it to go with the gun would add value. Get us some pictures and we will be able to tell you more about the gun and its value.

22 ctg again pics
Thanks glowe thats what I did but pics won't post...I think it's a file size problem. Tried downsizing resolution but upload still fails. 293 max kb jpg on the site? Will try to convert to pdf. #774 is on both the underside of the grip and under the catch. The wooden grips don't have any ID on them nor under them. Thanks again....Ed

22 ctg pics finally.
Had to convert from JPG to PDF. Do not have a metal case just a leather holster. Thanks for any input! It's a pretty cool gun. My only other other S/W is a 357.

This is a 4th model (Straight Line) Target. Mfg 1925 - 1936. Only 1870 were made. Yours appears to be in about ? 75% or "Fine" condition, possibly better. A hands on inspection by a knowledgeable S&W collector would get you the best information. The values keep going up on these, and I would think it would be above $1200, perhaps well above. Very nice one. I would keep it out of the holster, as that will continue to add scratch's and wear marks.

Rubber stamp:
CTG is "cartridge" & no part of the model designation.
That tells you the caliber, not the gun.

Nice score. Somebody bought one of these with box and most accessories today in a PA auction. My low bid was overrun, as I expected it might be, but it didn't sell for too much more than I had offered. I should have chased it.
Well, someday...
Congratulations. That is really quite a special target pistol.

Thanks for all the input. I'll probably just hang on to this one. Actually I can't seem to part with any of the guns I own! By the way David, what was the auction winning bid? Thanks again....Ed

$1500, and there would be some settlement fees on top of that. Total cost to the buyer might be 15-20% higher.

Well I have t say this pistol is worth considerably more than I initially thought. I had planned on taking it to the range and firing a few rounds through it but I guess this one goes in hiding for safe keeping.....Maybe....Ed

Ed, Go back and ask you Mother-In-law to give you the case for the gun. Ed.

A previous post mentioned that the leather holster could scratch the barrel and there is already some evidence of that. Is there another reason? Moisture? I'm in AZ so not a whole lot of humidity. I have a couple other pistols I leave in holsters, leather and synthetic so just wondering if this a bad practice.... Thanks, Ed

Yes, moisture.
Even in Arizona.
There are also some tanning acids in some holsters that can affect steel.
Never store a handgun you value in leather.
You use some form of air conditioner in your home?
